Task

Students will use the identify the following information:

Number of bones in the body

Names of all of the bones of the body including every cranial bone

Types of Bones in the body

Match the type of bone to specific bones (ie. Long Bone - Femur)

Number of Muscles in the body

Names of at least 50 muscles (25 upper body muscles, 25 lower body muscles)

What action do those 50 muscles perform (ie. biceps brachii bends elbow)

Identify and describe different injuries to muscles and bones

Identify common muscle injuries           10 Points
Identify common bone injuries           10 Points

Conclusion

You have completed a surface level examination of the bone and muscle anatomy of the human body. This will help you tremendously when we discuss injuries to different anatomical regions.  This is beginning point. To have a greater understanding of human anatomy and physiology a course on anatomy and physiology should be taken.

Students in a high school sports medicine class need to have a general knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Many students, despite the recommendation of course catalogs, do not have the prerequisite anatomy class and that can make the sports medicine class challenging.  The intent of this lesson is to provide the students an opportunity to examine anatomy at their own pace over the course of one to two weeks and develop a general working knowledge of the major bones and muscles of the body.
