Body Images on Social Media

Introduction

On Social Media, everything seems perfect and easy. Influencers are always healthy, happy, with flawless skin and the ideal body and silky hair. Going online without make-up or in ordinary clothes is instantly titled as "BRAVE" and not as normal.

Multiple studies imply that the body image of boys and girls who frequently consume social media is negatively affected as they compare themselves with these unrealistic body standards.

Hardly ever influencers are honest about how much work and time there is needed behind the scenes to create these perfect shots - and we do not even start talking about the common use of filters!

But nowadays, a change can be observed. More and more famous internet persons started sharing imagery and videos which show lower effort and seem to be more real. Mental health especially in relation to body image and body positivity has gained more public attention.

Task

Open a social media stream of your choice and scroll through the newsfeed for 5 minutes. What do you notice? Try to estimate how many posts are promoting "perfect" and "flawless" #lifegoals or #bodygoals? And how many show a more natuaral and realistic impression of that persons' lives?

In a second step, think back on your own posting behaviour. What kind of life are you presenting and which moments do you decide to share with the world? Is there a difference in your posting behaviour in terms of audience - for example, what is public and what do you only share with close friends or family? And why?

Thirdly, think about if your social media consumption has affected or is affecting your image of yourself and your goals in life. Be honest with yourself - are these goals realistic and healthy?
