Congratulations! You four have been selected to be apart of a research team heading to Antarctica. Make sure to bundle up in warm clothes because it is very cold and you will be working outside observing the penguins and their living area. You will be assigned a specific kind of penguin to study. You will learn all you can about your penguin and you will present your findings to a group of scientists who are studying penguins at the annual Penguin Conference in California.
Task
Researchers! It is your job to find out all you can about your assigned penguin so you are able to present your finding to other scientists who study penguins. They need your help in discovering more about penguins. Can you identify the different penguins?
You will observe your penguin in their natural habitat in Antarctica. You will need to find out all you can. You will need to answer the following questions: What is your type of penguin? What kind of food do they eat? What does your penguin look like? What is your penguin's behavior? Who or what are your penguin's enemies? Where do they live?
After all the information is collected in Antarctica, researchers will share their new knowledge on different types of penguins at the annual Penguin Conference. Each group will present their chart that includes information about the penguins.
Process
Your research team consists of four students. Assign the following jobs to each member of your team: Lead Researcher, Recorder/Photographer, Scientist, and Materials Handler.
But first, researchers you will work together and come up with what you already know about these penguins and any questions you have about them in a KWL chart. Then you will start your research!
In your research team, choose four penguins from the links below. I want you to draw and color a picture of the four penguins, that is one penguin per researcher. (Each link is provided by KidZone)

After choosing your four penguins, let the research begin! Start with one penguin and fill out the chart with as much information as you can find. Then move on to the next penguin and continue filling out the chart until all the penguin research as been completed. After filling out the chart, write as many interesting facts you found about your penguin that you will later share with the conference of scientists.
After all your research is completed, watch this short video on penguins and see if you can identify any of the penguins that you researched.

Evaluation
Each researcher will be evaluated on team work, completed penguin information chart, and facts about each penguin researched.

Conclusion
Congratulations research team! You completed your mission and research on four different penguins in Antarctica. You should now be able to identify different types of penguins and tell some facts about each one.
