Task

You are a journalist. You receive a message that says: "Black cop infiltrates KKK."

You decide that you will investigate this case and create a 3-minute TV report.

With your team, define your strategy, the steps of the investigation, the people to interview, the witnesses to meet.

Process

1. Create a hypothesis with group members based on "Black cop infiltrates KKK." (Groups of 4-5)

What could the story be? Who could be the protagonists?

2. Listen to the interview with Ron Stallworth https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p05jnmmt

Where did the inspiration to do what he did come from?

What did he actually do?

What made him a pioneer?

Write a short email to your editor in chief to tell him about the findings. Try to convince him why the story is worth investigating.

3. Around 8:30 https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p05jnmmt there’s a passage about Ron Stallworth’s conversations with KKK leader David Duke:

“When I started talking to David Duke, I said, ‘Aren’t you afraid of some smart Alec calling you up pretending to be white, so he could gain information about the Klan?’ And he said, ‘No, because I can always tell when I’m talking to one of THEM.’ He said, ‘Take you, for example, I can tell that you are a pure white man by the very fact of how you speak English.’ So he said, ‘Take the word ‘are’ — a-r-e. Educated white people like you and I, we pronounce it ‘are’. But a black man would pronounce it ‘ar-uh’.'"

How does the way you speak, dress and behave determine who you are and where you belong? Discuss in groups of 4-5. Record yourself with a phone and email it or send it via wetransfer.

4. Act out the telephone conversation between David Duke and Ron Stallworth https://theconversation.com/in-spike-lees-blackkklansman-language-is-power-102716  Film yourselves.

Duke: I can always tell when I’m talking to a Negro.

Stallworth: How so?

Duke: Take you, for example, Ron.

Stallworth: …Me?

Duke: Yeah. Now, I can tell that you’re a pure, Aryan white man by the way you pronounce certain words.

Stallworth: Can you give me any examples?

Duke: Yeah, take the word ‘are’. A pure Aryan like you or I would pronounce it correctly: ‘are’. A Negro pronounces it ‘are-uh’. D’you ever notice that? It’s like ‘Are-uh… you gonna fry up that… crispy fried chicken, soul brother?’

5. Read the article https://theconversation.com/in-spike-lees-blackkklansman-language-is-power-102716 and summarise what it is about in a video message that you will send to your editor.

6. Watch the trailer of BlacKkKlansman.

Discuss with your team members on https://framapad.org/en/ who the protagonists of your report will be and in what situations you would like to interview them. Distribute the roles among each other in your team. (cameraman, editor, cutter, reporter, interview partner(s)...)
