When making repairs on equipment, a technician must be able to successfully find, compile, and navigate a myriad of options and information in order to obtain optimal service and repairs.
What is the goal?
For this WebQuest, you will be given a damaged piece of equipment, a Baxter Sigma Spectrum Infusion Pump, and be will be asked to find all necessary information in order to successfully diagnose the problem, locate required replacement parts, obtain best pricing, and finally ordering the parts for a repair.

- Student is to find the required service manual for their medical device online, either by utilize search engines or contacting the manufacturer directly.
- Student will search for their issue with the equipment in the manual to determine if a part and/or service is required.
- Student will research information regarding the best course of action for repair by comparing vendors pricing, availability, turnaround time, etc.
- Student will compile all of their researched information and fill out an order request form for required services and submit.

To develop foundational skills that can be applied to real life situations during your work as a Biomedical Equipment Technician that will allow you to grow and expand your knowledge on any equipment that you may be working with.

Process
1. You have been given two Baxter Sigma Spectrum Infusion Pumps, each with its own error being displayed on the screen when you turn them on. The errors say, Pump 1: "Battery (Very) Low – Send Pump For Repair – " and Pump 2: "Clock Battery Low". In order to properly diagnose the exact issue and what parts or services need to be performed, you must first obtain a service manual for the pumps that will contain all of the error codes, part numbers, and other helpful information.

2. Service manuals can be found online by using various search engines and biomedical technician website groups such as Google, FranksHospitalWorkshop, and MedWrench to name a few. You must search through these websites by typing "Sigma Spectrum Infusion Pump Service Manual" and you will find a PDF file of the manual, save this to your computer and/or print it out to reference it for all problems associated with the equipment.
3. Now that you have the service manual, you must search through it in order to find the errors codes on the pumps given to you. Information regarding error codes is generally located in the 'Troubleshooting' or 'Error Codes' section of service manuals. Once you look each of the codes, you must determine if each piece of equipment needs to be sent out for service, or simply have a part ordered/replaced. If a part is required, continue searching through the service manual for the part number of the piece that is needing to be replaced.

4. Once you have determined the appropriate action to be taken for each pump, you must find an appropriate vendor with fair pricing on parts and decent turnaround time on service repairs. You must search through these websites to acquire this information then compile and list all data that you have found from these various websites. Try searching for the part number of the piece recommended to be replaced in the service manual. Also, try search for 'Sigma Spectrum Repair' for service options.

5. After listing all information, compare and contrast all of your options then choose which vendor is the best for ordering parts and which vendor is the best for ordering repair service. Submit all the information you believe to be best suited for each device.
Evaluation
The student will be graded based upon how accurate their diagnoses and recommendations are in regard to the proper repair of both pieces of equipment.

Conclusion
By practicing these skills, you will acquire the foundational requirements of being a Biomedical Equipment Technician. Being able to determine what information you need and where to find it is paramount, then acquiring it and utilizing it to troubleshoot and identify all required service and materials required to make a repair is also important. Ultimately, making the decision on what vendor to choose comes down to situational circumstances that all technicians must decide is best for their facility.
These skills will be used on a daily basis, therefore, I implore you to continue to look up parts in the service manual of this equipment or any others and search for pricing and availability across the internet.
