Biography of a Mathematician

Introduction

The history of math includes many mathematicians who have played an important role in the development of math in education.  You will research one mathematician and learn about their impact on the world of mathematics.

Be sure to visit the "evaluation" page to find out how your final product will be assessed.

Task

Your task is to choose one notorious mathematician in history and research his/her impact on mathematics in the world we live in today.

Once you have researched your mathematician, you will create a presentation to share your knowledge.

Process

Step 1:  Use the following links to choose and research a famous mathematician.  **If you have already completed the AUTOBIOGRAPHY of a Mathematician project, you must choose a DIFFERENT mathematician.**

The Famous People

FAB Pedigree

Famous Mathematicians

Step 2:  Once you choose your mathematician, research him or her to find:

1.  Date and place of birth

2.  Date and place of death

3.  Places the mathematician studied

4.  Living conditions and/or family life

5.  Field(s) of mathematics he/she had an impact

6.  Contributions to mathematics for our world today

Step 3:  Create a presentation outlining your research and how your mathematician has impacted mathematics and his/her impact on education.  This can be done in the form of a Google slide presentation, a PowToon, a Prezi.  Don't know what a PowToon or a Prezi is?  Research it!!

Evaluation

You will be evaluated on the following:

  • Final product is engaging and informative.

  • Student included all information listed about chosen mathematician.
  • Student is able to have a conversation showing a deep understanding of their research.
  • Hard work and effort is evident in the final product.

*Refer to the RESTAURANT RUBRIC on the 5th Grade math protopage for details about evaluation.*
