Be a Smart Financial Planner

Introduction

Imagine that you are a young adult who is preparing for your future. You want to buy something important, continue your studies, or start a small business. However, you have limited money and need to decide how to save and manage it wisely.

Mathematics can help us make better financial decisions. By using concepts such as percentages, simple and compound interest, budgeting, and financial planning, we can understand how our money can grow and how our spending affects our goals.

In this WebQuest, you will become a financial planner. Your goal is to use information from reliable websites to create a simple financial plan for a fictional young adult.

Essential Question:
How can mathematics help us make wise financial decisions?

Task

Your task is to create a Personal Financial Plan for a fictional young adult.

You will research information about saving, interest, budgeting, and financial goals. You will then use mathematical calculations to prepare a realistic financial plan.

Your final product should include:
1. Financial Goal – Identify what the person wants to achieve.
2. Monthly Income – Determine the person's available income.
3. Monthly Budget – Identify expected expenses and savings.
4. Savings Plan – Calculate how much should be saved regularly.
5. Interest Calculation – Use simple or compound interest to show how savings can grow.
6. Financial Recommendation – Explain why your proposed plan is appropriate.
7. Short Reflection – Explain what you learned about using mathematics in financial decisions.

Your final output may be presented as a digital poster, infographic, PowerPoint presentation, or one-page financial plan.

Process

Step 1 – Understand the Situation
Read the following situation:
Alex is a 20-year-old young adult who earns ₱15,000 per month. Alex wants to save ₱60,000 for an important future goal within one year. Alex also needs to pay for food, transportation, communication, and other personal expenses.
Your group will help Alex create a realistic financial plan.

Step 2 – Research
Use the provided online resources to learn about:
Budgeting
Saving money
Simple interest
Compound interest
Financial goals
Responsible financial management
Take note of important information that can help you make your financial plan.
Step 3 – Prepare a Monthly Budget
Determine how Alex's ₱15,000 monthly income will be divided.
Create a table similar to this:
Category
Monthly Amount
Food ₱_____
Transportation ₱_____
Communication ₱_____
Personal Expenses ₱_____
Savings ₱_____
Other Expenses ₱_____
Total ₱15,000

Make sure that the total expenses and savings do not exceed Alex's monthly income.

Step 4 – Create a Savings Plan
Alex wants to save ₱60,000 in one year.
Calculate:
How much should Alex save every month?
What percentage of the monthly income will go to savings?
Is the goal realistic based on the monthly budget?
Show your mathematical solution.

Step 5 – Investigate Interest
Research how simple interest and compound interest work.
Use the appropriate formula to determine how Alex's savings could grow if the money earns interest.
Compare the results and explain the difference between simple and compound interest.

Step 6 – Make a Financial Recommendation
Based on your research and calculations, prepare your recommendation for Alex.
Your recommendation should answer:
Is Alex's savings goal realistic?
What expenses could be reduced?
How much should Alex save each month?
How can Alex reach the financial goal more effectively?
Why is it important to have a budget?

Step 7 – Create Your Final Product
Present your financial plan through a digital poster, infographic, PowerPoint presentation, or one-page financial plan.
Your presentation must contain:
Financial Goal → Income → Expenses → Savings → Interest Calculation → Recommendation → Reflection
Make your presentation clear, organized, and easy to understand.

Step 8 – Present and Reflect
Present your financial plan to the class.
After the presentation, answer these questions:
What mathematical concept did you use the most?
What did you learn about budgeting and saving?
What financial decision was difficult to make?
How can mathematics help you manage your own money in the future?

Evaluation

Your WebQuest output will be evaluated using the following rubric:

Criteria Excellent (20 pts) Good (15 pts) Fair (10 pts) Needs Improvement (5 pts)
