Solving Word Problems

Introduction

You are a world-class pizza maker and want to open up a restaurant. However, if you don't open your restaurant soon, you are going to run out of money. You need to find a location and come up with a menu quick!

Task

As an aspiring restaurant owner, you are going to have to use your thinking abilities to find the best location in terms of price per square foot. You want the most for your money so you want to find whatever property has the cheapest price per square foot. You also need to come up with a menu consisting of different pizza flavors. However, you need to make sure that your prices are reasonable in comparison to the other pizza places around you. Otherwise, you will not be in business very long. Make sure that you can provide the best deal to your customers so they can get the most for their dollar and ensure that they will keep coming back.

Process

In order to be successful with this assignment, you will need to use researching skills as well as problem solving skills. In order to figure out how to get the most for your money in terms of the property that you purchase, you will need to take the amount that the building costs and divide it by the size of the building in square feet. Whichever building gives you the smallest number is the one that you want to buy. When coming up with your menu, you will need to come up with pizza prices, topping prices, and french fry prices.

In order to find your property, you will need to go online and find 3 properties that are up for sale in Delaware. You will write down the address to these properties, the size of the property in square feet, and how much the property costs. You will then determine the best deal using your problem solving skills to figure out where your restaurant will be located.

In order to create your menu, you will need to research the competition and find out what prices they are offering. Using the address for the property you have bought, you will need to find 3 other pizza places in that town. You will look at their menus and then record their prices for each size cheese pizza. You will then see how much they charge per topping for each pizza and record that data. Finally, you will see how much they charge for an order of fries and record that data. In order to give your customers the best deal, you will need to either charge lower prices or charge the same price but give them a bigger size then the competitor. You will then create a realistic menu and turn it in with all of your research. If you can complete this task within two class periods, you will become the best restaurant in town.

Evaluation

While researching, you will record your data and all the work you have done on paper and will turn that into me when we are finished with the lesson. Based on the work you turn in along with the menu, I will grade you upon having all calculations done with evidence of word problem solving skills being used. If all work is there, you will receive full credit. If not, I will deduct points for each problem that is missing.

Conclusion

For homework, you will write a journal about how having problem solving skills can help you in the real world to make better decisions. You will also do problems 1-5 on pg. 112 of your textbook.

Teacher Page

This webquest would take approximately two class periods but may take three dependent upon the skill of your learners. It involves the ability to do good research as well as having the children solve some word problems. They get to be creative and have fun throughout this lesson while creating their menus. The best advice I can give to teachers is to be clear in how you want the students to accomplish this task and have fun with it!
