Introduction
Have you ever picked up something hot and pulled your hand back immediately? Or gotten chills down your back when you were afraid? That's your nervous system in action. You can think of it as your body's message network. Just as a city needs telephones and telephone cables to pass messages, your body needs nerves and the brain to pass messages rapidly and clearly. Your nervous system assists you in moving, sensing, thinking, and responding. It controls everything you do.
The nervous system has three components.
-
The Brain 🧠
Your brain is sort of the headquarters of your body. It gets information, makes choices, and gives directions to the rest of your body. From figuring out math problems to remembering a tune, your brain is going full time. -
The Spinal Cord 🦴
The spinal cord is the central “highway” for information going between the body and the brain. It descends along your back, within the protection of the spine, and it helps you move, feel, and respond in a matter of seconds. -
The Nerves ⚡
Nerves are cables branching out throughout your body. They bring messages to and from your brain and spinal canal. Some of them help you feel things such as touch, taste, or pain, and others keep your muscles so you can walk, run, or swim.
You wouldn’t be able to feel, move, or even think without your nervous system. Your every thought, reaction, and movement rely on this fabulous system to function and to function twenty-four-seven!
Task
In this WebQuest, you will:
1- watch a YouTube video about the nervous system and answer 7 unique questions about the nervous system.
2- Test your reaction time using a website.
Process
Step 1: Learn the Nervous system:
Watch the YouTube videos:
After watching the video, answer these questions:
-
What does the nervous system control in our daily life?
-
What are the two main parts of the nervous system?
-
Which two organs make up the central nervous system?
-
What protects the brain inside our head?
-
What is the largest part of the brain called?
-
Which side of the brain helps with math, speech, and logic?
-
What connects the brain to the spinal cord and controls breathing and digestion?
-
What are the two types of nerves in the peripheral nervous system?
-
What are the three main parts of a neuron?
Step 2: Test your reaction time:
Your reaction time is the time needed for your nervous system to react. The average reaction time is 225 ms.Open the following link to test your reaction time:
https://humanbenchmark.com/tests/reactiontime
Instructions:
1. Click on the blue area where it says "click" once. Do not hold.
2. Wait for the color to change into green, and click as fast as possible. This video
Step 3: record your values
Repeat 5 times, and record your values in a table.
Find the average reaction time: to do this, add up your reaction times (eg. 223 + 229 + ...) and divide the big sum by 5.
Is your average reaction time within the most common range (150 ms - 300 ms)?
Step 4: Higher-order thinking:
- Why is reaction time limited?
- Write the process the nervous system goes through as you were testing your reaction time.
Evaluation
| Standards | Points | Criteria |
| Correct answers of the questions | 1 point each | Not applicable |
| Correct recording of values and taking average | 4 point for recording, 4 point for average | The correct formula must be used for the average. The numbers should be realistic. Units must be written. |
| Higher Order Thinking | 5 points for each | The student demonstrates understanding of the topic and is able to describe step by step the process of sensing and clicking. |
Conclusion
It has become clear that the nervous system is the body’s command center, managing everything from breathing to movement. It is divided into two main parts: the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (sensory and motor nerves). The reaction time test added a fun, hands-on way to explore how quickly signals travel through this system, showing that reaction time falls within a common range of 150–300 ms. Although limited by the speed of nerve signals and brain processing, the activity highlighted the amazing teamwork between sensory nerves, the brain, and motor nerves.
