Building a New Society from Scratch

Introduction

Lord of the Flies Pre-Assessment

Part 1: You and your group are stranded on a desert island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. You will have to survive there for a year without contact with the outside world. The island has:

  • Fresh water
  • Banana trees
  • Coconut palms

The climate is mild (not too hot, not too cold) first individually make a list of 8-10 things you think you will need to survive. Then, as a group you will have to decide on 8 things, list them in order of importance.

Students think of their own personal lists first.

In groups they first list all the possible problems they will encounter, then decide on a list of items that will help with these problems.

Task

Part 2: Students must go into more depth about how their island will work.

You will create a poster on chart paper detailing how government will be set up within your island society. Pay attention to:

  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Division of labour
  • Leadership
  • Justice / punishment / laws /rules
  • Decision making

You must incorporate research into your group's findings. You will have ten minutes to collect data from the following sites:

1. Learn basic survival needs:

and more basic survival skills

Process

While working in groups, you will have the chance to use resources from several stations:

1. Books on Survival

2. Books on Government

3. Interactive SMART Board Survival Quiz (http://www.animalplanet.com/tv-shows/i-shouldnt-be-alive/games-more/extreme-survival-quiz.htm

4. Student Computer Work Station

At all points in the project, students are expected to collect data and think critically. Once you have collected all of your data, you may begin to create your poster.

Good luck!
