Introduction
AUSTRALIA'S GLOBAL ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Australia demonstrates their global citizenship to other countries through a variety of methods: peacekeeping, humanitarian relief and foreign aid.
In 2019, Australia spent $4 billion on foreign aid to help nations to grow and develop. While this sounds like a large sum of money, this only equates to 0.2% of our gross national income (GNI).
In this lesson you will:
- Evaluate the effectiveness of our foreign aid
- Analyse the various sectors which are receiving aid
- Evaluate trends in foreign aid over the years
- Determine the key recipients of foreign aid and how this aid is being utilised
Therefore, the four areas of focus will be:
Efficacy - how effective is our foreign aid?

Sectors - which are the various sectors receiving aid?

Trends - what have been the trends in foreign aid from Australia over the years?

Recipients - who are they key recipients of foreign aid and how have they been utilising it?

Task
To begin, watch the following videos below:
Process
You will work in groups of 4, your task is to investigate Australian foreign aid obligations and trends.
1. Get together as a group and look at the 4 areas of focus outlined in the Introduction. Choose one of the areas of focus you would like to focus on and investigate further using the links above (in the introduction).
2. As a group ensure each of the group members has a different area of focus and is ready to begin.
3. You are to become a subject expert on the area of focus/topic you have chosen. You will be responsible for informing your other group members and eventually the rest of the class about your topic, therefore you will need to create 1-2 PowerPoint slides on your topic.
4. After each member has completed their topic, you will come together as a group and compile your PowerPoint slides into one overall PowerPoint Presentation for your whole group encompassing your whole topic.
5. Upon completion of your overall PowerPoint presentation, you will be submitting your PowerPoint to your teacher via email (one email per group). I will make these available for you to view each other's presentations as a learning opportunity on Microsoft Teams.
Evaluation
Go back and check your final PowerPoint against the steps - have you included ALL the necessary information and focus areas?
Conclusion
After completing your combined PowerPoint, answer these questions individually in your notebooks:
1. Why does Australia have a larger responsibility to provide foreign aid than other countries in our region?
2. Which organisation administers foreign aid programs in Australia?
3. Considering the three types of aid (NGO's, multilateral and bilateral) which type/s of aid does foreign aid fall into? Explain your answer
4. Suggest what might happen if the Australian government refused to provide emergency aid to a neighbouring country in need
