Introduction
This assignment was made in order to give you a chance to think through the process of solving equations in terms of the variable "x". Understanding the rules for solving an equation is an important part of your foundation in mathematics, and will help you in future math classes. Not only do math skills improve your GPA, but having a deep understanding of mathematics (specifically solving equations) is something you will need if you want to improve future SAT score.
To accomplish the task of understanding how to solve an equation, you will choose a few equations and go to the specific websites given to you in order to learn how to solve them. Once you have learned how to solve the equations, you must show all work done for each problem on a piece of paper.
Task
During this assignment you will choose an equation from each pair of equations listed below and solve for x. (You should have 3 equations picked and have all work shown for each problem):
1st Pair
9x + 7 = 5x - 3
5x - 6 = 3x - 8
2nd Pair
2x/5 + 1 = 13/5
9x/9 = 18/9
3rd Pair
6(2x + 1) = 7
2(6x + 3) = 7
Process
After choosing your 3 equations you can go to the following websites to read about the rules necessary for solving them:

| Determining the answer. (scores may include values such as "3.5" or "1.5" for small mistakes). |
Can't find the value of "x" in any of the three problems. | Can find what "x" equals in one problem out of the three. | Determines the value of "x" in two problems. | Accomplishes every step in each problem and solves for the variable "x". | |
| Showing correct steps. | No steps are written with or without the answer given. | Some steps are given, but not enough is shown to show that the student understands the problem. | Almost all steps to the problems are given, but a few errors occur. | Shows all correct steps to each problem. | |
Conclusion
After finishing this assignment the student will have a larger "tool box" that they can use to solve equations with one variable in them. If more instruction is needed, the following youtube account has an array of videos that explain all kinds of math properties, including properties related to solving linear equations.
