Assessing Geologic Hazards at Home and Preparing an Evacuation Plan

Introduction

Geologic hazards such as Earthquakes and Volcanic Eruptions are among the top natural hazards that pose risks to our country. In line with that, it is important to assess and evaluate various potential hazards tied up with these Geological hazards. By understanding the hazard and evaluating vulnerabilities, we'll be able to prepare and reduce the risks involved.

Task

Students will be doing the following task:

1. Assess potential earthquake and volcanic hazards based on location.

2. Make use of available resources to gather information about the hazards.

3. Create an evacuation map or route considering the distance of the houses to a potential evacuation site,

Process

1. Earthquake Hazard Assessment at Home

Evaluate the earthquake hazard at home by obtaining and presenting the following information:

  • Year constructed, age, and no. of floors of residential structure.Type of material used in the structure:

2. Volcanic Hazard Assessment at Home

Evaluate the volcanic hazard at home by obtaining and presenting the following information:

Conclusion

Site assessment and evaluation is important before starting the implementation of measures or actions relating to DRRM. These could be of great help to determine the appropriate measures suitable for a particular location based on the results of assessment.
