Argument to:

Introduction

Hey guys!

Today we’re going to explore the different types of arguments: “convince and inform,” “persuade,” “make decisions,” and “understand and explore.”

You’ll have four different tasks, one for each argument, and a series of questions afterwards.

Have fun !

Group: Theresa, Braxton, and Sam

Task

Task 1:

  1. What is the argument discussing?

  2. What is the goal of the argument?

  3. Who is the intended audience?

  4. How does the argument achieve this?

  5. Finally, what kind of argument is this?

Task 2:

  • Watch Barbie!

https://youtu.be/RCzwoMDgF_I

  • Answer the following:
  1. Are any kind of appeals being used? Emotional, logical, or credible appeals?

  2. What is the ultimate goal of the video?

  3. What kind of methods are used to strengthen the argument?

  4. Does this video make you want to do anything or take action?

  5. What kind of argument do you believe this is?

Task 3:

  1. What kind of argument do you think this is?

  2. What is the purpose of listing the pros and cons?

  3. Do you think this is a biased argument?

  4. Do you believe these kind of arguments are effective when they’re biased or unbiased?

Task 4

Watch the video:

https://youtu.be/oTR7QlKq2Nk

  • Answer the questions:
  1. Who is the targeted audience?

  2. Did you learn anything or gain a new perspective?

  3. Was this a prejudiced summary of kpop?

  4. Would you consider listening to kpop now? (You should say yes!!!).

  5. What argument is this?

Process

  • Go to each task.
  • Visit the website or video linked with the task.
  • Answer each question following the website or video!

Conclusion

Task 1

  • Task 1 was an article about Trader Joe’s (surprise surprise). This was to help the class understand the “argument to convince and inform”. How? Well the argument doesn’t push the audience to shop at Trader Joe’s, but rather INFORM the audience of all the positives of TJ’S. The direct evidence from pictures that back up each claim the author makes helps the audience believe Trader Joe’s really is a great place to shop because the evidence is reasonable.

Task 2

  • You’ve got to love educated Barbie and Nikki! While Barbie and Nikki explore the effects of racism, Nikki uses a personal anecdote to push the audience to stand up against racism. Barbie and Nikki aren’t just trying to explain that racism is inherently wrong. They are teaching and, well, PERSUADING their audience to fight against racism! They are seeking their audience to move beyond conviction and to action. Argument to persuade.

Task 3

  • The link was essentially a pros and cons list of attending college, something in our looming future. While we explore our options, this link helps us explore whether or not college is the best route to take. This link helps us examine our options for a course of action: college or no college. It’s an argument to make decisions!

Task 4

  • KPOP! This video was an unbiased and very quick summary of the history of kpop. Hopefully, it helped explore a new possible genre of music. It educated the audience on something it may not be knowledge about without any prejudice. It’s invites people to EXPLORE kpop more on their own; it’s an argument to explore!
