Blasting through the Solar System!

Introduction

BLASTING THROUGH THE SOLAR SYSTEM!

ATTENTION: Miss Anyssa's Astronauts! We need you to blast through the solar system to help NASA gather information on each planet! Are you ready?

...BLASTOFF!

Task

JOBS FOR ASTRONAUTS:

CAPTAIN ASTRONAUT: Supervisor of the journey! They will help the students stay on track of the solar system journey while also keeping in contact with the command center. The captain will take initiative for making sure all the work for NASA is coming along accurately and effectively.

NAVIGATION ASTRONAUT: They will navigate the "solar" quest safely. This person will navigate through the solar system to gather all necessary information for NASA.

PLANET DATA RECORDER: They will neatly fill out the data sheets for each planet!

ENGINEERING ASTRONAUT: Incorporates data to post cards with help of crewmembers. They will build and create the necessary projects for their planets.

Process

Your mission is to....

1) Chose 4 different planets to travel to! (NOT including Earth)

2) Use these websites to find out the information you will have to gather on your planets:

                   1:  http://www.planetsforkids.org

                                   2: http://www.kidsastronomy.com/solar_system.htm

3) The information that you will gather on your planet is listed below.

  1. What is the distance of your planet from the sun?
  2. What is the length of your planets year?
  3. What is the length of your planets day?
  4. What is the average temperature on your planet?
  5. HOw much would you weigh on your planet?
  6. What is the diameter of your planet?
  7. What is your planet made up of?
  8. How many moons are on your planet?
  9. How many rings are on your planet?
  10. Give a visual description of your planet, as you saw it.

4) Create a Post Card to communicate back to NASA with using the information that you gathered on your planet. BE CREATIVE! :)

Evaluation

Conclusion

OH NO!!! According to NASA the rocket ship that you are on is going to land on your favorite planet, and not come back to Earth! They want to thank you in advance for gathering all the information from the different planets. They would like to know what planet was your favorite so they can redirect your rocket ship! Good luck on the rest of

 your travels!

NGSS STANDARDS:

5-ESS1-1. Support an argument that differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from Earth.

5-ESS1-2. Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky.
