Drawing techniques and Styes

Introduction

Welcome to the drawing techniques and styles webquest!

Task

For this webquest, you will be tasked with researching how to draw any animal of your choosing (and I mean any!) using tutorials found on the web. Compare the techniques of three different artists as you follow along with them, and take notes.

Process

Begin by deciding on an animal. Once you have decided on an animal, go online and find a tutorial (Youtube for example) on how to draw the animal. You will be locating a total of three different tutorials, each by different artists. An example would be the artist Mark Crilley, (found here with a tutorial on a lion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBcEuINB6tU )

Once you have found three, follow the tutorials to draw your animal. Try to match the artist's techniques with their mark making and style. Watch the way they hold the pencil, too!

As you follow the tutorials, take notes about what techniques work for you and which ones don't, different ways of mark making, and other aspects of the tutorial that stand out to you.

When you've finished all three, compare the different artists' styles and techniques. Analyze how these differences in techniques affect the artists' stye (is it loose, crisp, bold? What techniques cause this). Then write about the techniques you feel were most effective to you and what you feel you learned from these artists.

Evaluation

You will be graded not on the results of your sketches, but that you did them. The focus of this webquest is to study drawing techniques and how they relate to the style of the artists who use them. I will be grading you based on the notes and analysis that you do, as well as your final conclusions about the techniques and how style is affected by them.

Conclusion

This is designed to help you discover how techniques and style are connected.
