Introduction
Anne Frank was gifted her diary at the age of thirteen while she was hiding in the Secret Annex, little did she know that it would become her legacy and it would give us insight to what really happened during the chilling times of the Holocaust.
Anne believed that even bad people could be good "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart." This quote means so much to society because this young girl went through so much and still had hope for people.
Anne Frank, a Jewish girl of Germany, was only twelve when her family was forced into hiding. She hid in the tight quarters on Prinsengracht 263. Anne, her father, mother, sister (Margot), Peter Van Daan, Mrs. Van Daan, Mr. Van Daan, and the Van Daan’s cat all stayed in a small hiding space above Otto Frank’s industrial business. They became like one big family and spent more than 2 years together in hiding. Peter Van Daan was the only boy around her age that she interacted with for 671 days, and there are theories about their relationship, but it was nothing was ever confirmed
.
From 8 in the morning until 6 at night all 8 of the people staying in this small spot had to be completely silent or they would be found and executed. They were never allowed to leave their hiding place and for 671 days Anne added an entry into her diary. She found a spot, even in the small amount of space available, to escape from the people and write down her thoughts. She called this place her Annex and she could always find inspiration from peering out of her own little window to catch a glimpse of the outside world.
Anne was very young when she went into hiding and her diary was one of the only things salvaged after the German Nazis raided her home and sent Anne, her family, and their new family, the Van Daans to separate concentration camps. No one made it out of the concentration camps except for Otto Frank, Anne’s father. He published her diary and now Anne’s words have been translated into over 70 languages. She lives on through the inspirational words included in every entry of her diary.
