Introduction
Group: Grade 5, Primary.
Duration: 2 x 60 minute sessions
Topic: Animal Cells
This week we are working on animal cells. Read the information provided and follow the instructions to complete each task.
Cells are very small structures found in all living things. They are what makes up plants, dolphins, ants, and us. Some bacteria are made up of only one cell (unicellular). Animals are made up of millions and millions of cells. Humans are made up of 30 trillion cells! A living thing is made up of more than one cell is called multicellular.
Organelles found inside the cells are responsible for different functions.
There are many different types, sizes, and shapes of cells in the body. Groups of similar cells form tissues. Groups of tissues make up organs. Groups of organs make up organ systems.
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was the first person to ever observe a cell under a microscope in 1674

Task
1. How big is a cell?
Go to the following link to see how big an animal cell is compared to the head of a pin, a human hair and a mite.

(Sullivan, James A. May, 1994)
2. Watch this video and answer the following questions in your notebook:
(Miacademy Learning Channel. 2020, 28 Feb)
Q1. What three things make up cell theory?
Q2. What are all the parts of the cell collectively called?
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Q3. Draw a picture of the cell in your notebook and name each part.
Q4. Using the explanation in the video, write a definition for each part:
Cell Membrane:
Centrioles:
Cytoplasm:
Ribosomes:
Nucleus:
Mitochondrion:
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum:
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum:
Golgi Apparatus:
Lysosome:
4. Play this Map Quiz
https://www.educaplay.com/learning-resources/7689964-parts_of_the_cell.html
Take a screen shot of your result and email it to the teacher (you can repeat the Map Quiz as many times as you like!)
Process
The Big Question!
Are animal and plant cells the same? Explain.
You can present your answer in a video, powerpoint, poster (Canva or traditional) or if you have an alternative method get permission from the teacher prior to starting.
Evaluation
This activity will be evaluated using a 1-5 scale.
The following aspects will be taken into consideration:
- Work well with their partner
- The use of the resources available
- Interest and participation in the activity
- Presentation of their work (spelling, cleanliness, expression)
- Correct answers to questions
