Animal and plant habitats

Introduction

Have you ever wondered why some animals live in different parts of the world? What types of environments those animals need to live in in order to survive? What will happen if those animals can't meet their needs of survival? You will find the answers to these questions throughout this WebQuest as you explore the different types of animal habitats.

Task

Throughout this WebQuest, you will explore five different animal habitats. You will view the pictures, click the links, and read the information throughout this WebQuest to learn about animal habitats. As you explore the different habitats you will write your findings on graphic organizer post in the link below.

At the end of your exploration, you will use your findings of animal habitats to answer a set of questions.

Process

1. Desert habitat

Deserts are the driest places on Earth. Deserts don't get a lot of rain throughout the year, which makes the temperatures in deserts super hot throughout the year. The animals that live in the desert have adpated to the hot desert environment and do not need much water to survive. Some animals you will find in the desert are camels, snakes, desert foxes, and kangaroo rats. Some plants you will find in the desert are cacti and mesquite grass.

2. Rainforest habitat

Rainforests get a lot of rain throughout the year. A rainforest is a very wet and warm environment. A rainforest has four layers, the emergent layer, the canopy, understory, and the forest floor The emergent layer is made up of the tallest trees in a rainforest. The canopy layer is made up of trees and branches, and is where most of the animals live in a rainforest. The understory is made up of small trees and plants that do not need much light to grow. The forest floor is the lowest layer of a rainforest and is only made up of plants. Some animals you will find in a rainforest are frogs, lizards, and monkeys. Some plants that you will find in a rainforest are Orchids and bamboo.

3. Freshwater habitat

Freshwater habitats are made up of rivers, creeks, lakes, and ponds. A freshwater habitat has many woody plants, trees, and grass. Some animals you will find in a freshwater habitat are alligators, turtles, otters, and marsh birds. Some plants you will find in a freshwater habitat are algae, cattails, water lilies, and willow trees.

4. Polar habitat

Polar habitats are very cold. A polar habitat is mostly covered in ice and snow. Some animals you will find in a polar habitat are polar bears, arctic foxes and penguins. You won't find many plants in a polar habitat due to the cold temperature.

5. Ocean habitat

Ocean habitats consists of areas of salty water. Oceans have about one million different species that live in its habitat. That one million different species include plants and animals. Some animals you will find in an ocean habitat are fish, whales, sharks, and dolphins. Some plants that you will find in an ocean habitat are kelp, algae, and sea grass.

Evaluation

Now that you have learned about different animal habitats, you will answer the following questions to check your understanding of what you have learned.

1. What is a habitat?

    a. A place where an animal lives.

    b. How an animal behaves.

    c. A group of animals

2. Which habitat is the driest place on Earth?

    a. Ocean

    b. Desert

    c. freshwater

3. Which habitat consists of four layers?

    a. Freshwater

    b. Polar

    c. Rainforest

4. A polar habitat is very ______.

    a. cold

    b. warm

    c. dry

5. The layer of the rainforest where most animals live is called _________________.

6. A plant that lives in the desert and holds water is called ___________________.

7. The forest floor of a rainforest is only made up of __________________.

8. List an two animals that live in the ocean.

9. List the four bodies of water a freshwater habitat is made of.

10. Explain the similarities and differences of two of the habitats you learned about in this WebQuest.

Throughout this WebQuest students will explore five types of animal habitats. The students will learn about what each habitat consists of and about some of the animals that live in these habitats.

Standard: 2-LS4-1

Performance Expectation: Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats.

Disciplinary Core Ideas: There are many kinds of living things in any area, and they exist in different places on land, in water, and in air.
