The Bill of right states
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The first Amendment was first ratified in December 15, 1791. It protects us citizens by letting us have the freedom of speech, press, and lastly religion. The First amendment lets us have an opinion on a law that we might not like.

Why does the United States let people have freedom of speech?
The U.S lets us have this right because we have a democratic government so we are free to choose and they can’t force us to do anything that the majority of the population disagrees to.
Freedom of Religion:
