Analyzing symbols in short story

You are a detective in charge of finding all the mysteries surrounding Edgar Allan Poe's story "Tell-Tale Heart", determining all the symbols that surround it and looking for answers to why they use those colors, expressions of the characters, the movements within the video, the tone of voice of the narrator, among other aspects. From this moment on, you are Sherlock Holmes of classic literature. 

Task

You are going to become a mystery detective. Are you ready to build hypotheses from a classic tale? As you watch the video of Edgar Allan Poe's short story "Tell-Tale Heart" you should take notes on symbols revealed in the story that give it meaning and some hypotheses as to why that symbol is used (color, character, position of objects, light, tone of voice) and not another. Your job is to understand how to do a good story analysis in order to construct a story of your own that will be analyzed by your classmates. 

Process

1. Read about what symbolism is and how to analyze it in both written stories and videos. 

You will go to the following link: Literary Techniques: Symbolism | Learn How to Analyse Symbolism (matrix.edu.au) . You will read the page that explains what symbolism is, how symbolism works, how to analyze symbolism and the steps to follow, and you will be able to see some examples of symbolism analysis. You should take notes to keep these aspects in mind for homework.

2. Do a reading of symbolism in films. 

You will go to the following link: Film Symbolism | How to Analyse Symbolism in Film or TV (matrix.edu.au) . You will read the page that explains the different forms of cinematic symbolism and how it is analyzed. You will take notes of the most relevant aspects to take into account in your final work. 

3. Watch a video of Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Tell-Tale Heart".

You will go to the following link:

it will take you to the video of the story "tell-tale heart". From there, you will be able to watch the whole story. You should take note of all the relevant aspects within the video that make sense of the story, drawing your own hypotheses about why it was done that way and not another, why the presence of certain symbols, making an analysis not only of the video as a visual reminder but also of the content of the story. 

4. Make an interactive presentation in Genially where you expose all the symbols, hypothesis and conclusions you reached after analyzing the story, maximum 5 slides. This is the link to Genially: Genially, the tool for creating interactive content - Genially

5. You will create a short story.

You will go to the following link: Definition of classic tale and its characteristics - Juicy English You will read the characteristics of a classic short story that will be taken into account for the creation of the classic short story. Then, you will go to Word and start writing a short story with the theme of your choice, no more than one page in Arial 14 font. From there, you will make the audio recording of the story on the following page: Vocaroo | Grabadora de voz en línea . You will download the audio of your story on the desktop of your computer. Then, you will find an application to create videos (Movie Maker, KineMaster, etc) in which you will add images related to the story and the audio of the story. Upload the video to Yotube and share the link in the "Literary Analysis Class" group in Teams. Watch the videos of two of your classmates and make a commentary for each one in which you analyze both the video and the story about the symbolism and aspects that give meaning to the story. The commentary should be written in an academic, grammatically correct and formal language.

The understanding of the subject matter on the analysis of the symbolism in both the film and the story is evident.        

The presentation is a maximum of 5 slides and interactive.

       

The story meets the characteristics of a classic story.

       

The video of the story has: a clear audio, with good pronunciation, tone of voice according to the theme of the story, the images are according to the story and the transition goes hand in hand with the audio.

       

The comments were made to two classmates and comply with being coherent, academically written and grammatically correct.

Conclusion

You have done an excellent job understanding how to do video analysis of literary constructions. There is much more to learn about the meaning of certain symbols that give meaning to a story or film, aspects that will be discussed later in the course. 

Let's think: can we only analyze symbolism in video and text or also in people and their actions?
