Food and Nutrition for 1st graders

Introduction

Today, we are going to talk more about healthy foods and nutrition. You are all potential constestants for a game show called "The Pyramid". Are you ready to get started?

Task

Congratulations, you have been chosen as a potential contestant on our game show. Today, we will be testing your knowledge on Foods and Nutrition with our application. With the application, we will be able to see how much you already know to prepare you for the game show.

Process

Below is the game show application chart. Your job is to correctly determine whether the food listed on the left column is healthy or not healthy. If the food is healthy, put a (+) next to the food in the healthy column. If the food is not healthy, put a (0) next to the food in the not healthy column. When you are done, turn the application into your teacher, she will add you to the list of constestants for our game show.

You seem like a really nice person, and we want you to succeed, so we are going to give you a head start. Below are links to websites with a lot of cool information about healthy versus not healthy foods and nutrition.

Evaluation

Once you are done with your application, please turn it into your teacher. You will then get a chance to show your skills at the next game show. You will then be graded on how well you can determine if a food is healthy or not healthy.

Conclusion

We eat healthy foods so we can be healthy people. Our bones can grow big and strong by drinking milk, and nuts give us the protein we need to be strong. Did you know that in the future, if you are not sure if a food is healthy or not healthy, you can go back to the websites that are full of foods and nutrition information. For your reference, they are listed below again. A healthy life is a happy life!

Teacher Page

In order to help your students and make the activity fun, you can hold a mock game show where you make a chart similar to the one listed here.  You may want to shake things up a bit and put in facts that they would find in the links provided.  You can then provide a reward such as candy, special award, etc.
