Task

Good day Learners

I hope all is well.

You are expected to complete Activity 1 and 2. You will have to determine the common factor in the expression. If you still not familiar on how to do this, you will find some extra notes attached to the activity. Just to be safe, rather go through the notes before hand. It is compulsory that you work on this with a partner. I will include a marking criteria.

Process

Algebraic Expressions - Common Factor

Example 1: Determine the common factor

a) 2x + 4 ----------------- Now you ask yourself, what are the factors of '2x' ? It is 1 and 2.

------------------ What are the factors of 4? It is 1,2 and 4.

------------------ What are the Highest common factor that are the same in both terms? It is 2.

------------------ Therefore, 2 is the common factor.

Final answer :  2( x + 4)

b) 6y - 3 ----------------- Now you ask yourself, what are the factors of '6y' ? It is 1, 2 , 6 and 3.

------------------ What are the factors of 3It is 1 and 3.

------------------ What are the Highest common factor that are the same in both terms? It is 3

------------------ Therefore, 3 is the common factor.

Final answer :  3(2y + 1)

Activity 1:

a) What is a common factor?

Factorize the following:

Activity 2: Factorize the following by determining the common factor:

  1. 3x+9                                                                4.
  2.                                                         5.
  3.                                               6.
Evaluation

Student demonstrates an understanding of binomial and trinomial expressions with determining the common factor. This includes finding strategies for addition and subtraction.

Beginning(1) Approaching(2) Proficiency(3) Mastery(4)
I need help with becoming consistent with the criteria. I can add binomials and trinomials. I can subtract binomials and trinomials.

I can solve questions.

I have the ability to see errors I have made.

I am able to determine the common factor.

I am able to write the answer correctly without making mistakes.

Conclusion

Learners you are expected to practice these expressions.

Determine the common factor by finding the factors of all the terms. Thereafter, choose the highest common factor (HCF).

In this case, the HCF that appears in all the terms then write it in front of the bracket.

Remember a term can have more then 1 factor.
