Literarcy Circles for Piggies in a Pumpkin Patch

Introduction

Literacy circles allow students to work together in a small group to discuss a piece of literature. Children in kindergarten can enjoy these literacy circles just like the children in older grades. Children can use this time in their literacy circle to gain further knowledge about a piece of literature from their peers as they each discuss what they have learned or think of a piece of literature. Peer sharing can be more beneficial to students because they have closer view points of each other than a teacher may have with the students.

In this lesson you will participate in a literary circle with 3 of your peers. Each member of the circle will read the story Piggies in a Pumpkin Patch.  After each member has completed the reading you will work together to discuss each place in the story where alliteration is used. Discuss what kind of alliteration was used.

As a group you will make your own farm story using alliteration. How much alliteration can you and your group come up with? Which  places would you discuss in your alliterative story?

Task

You will learn to :

  • define alliteration.
  • recognize alliteration in text.
  • write your own alliterations.

You may use Piggies in the Pumpkin Patch, videos or DVD’s, or Web sites to learn unfamiliar words or phrases.

Process

Here are some steps that you will follow to accomplish this goal.

  1. First you will assigned to a literary circle and read Piggies in a Pumpkin Patch
  2. You will discuss with your literary circle the use of alliteration in this piece of literature.
  3. You will work together as a group and make a list of each alliteration in the text.
  4. As a group you will each come up with your own alliteration and discuss with your group.
  5. Use the clarkness website as a group and find more stories that use alliteration.
  6. Together as a group, you and your literary circle will write a short story together using alliterations.

Once each group is finished with their search and writing their stories we will share with the whole group class. Each literary circle will share the story they wrote together as well as the story they found on the clarkness website. The class as a whole will discuss some of the alliterations we found and some that we wrote.
