Food Web- Grade 4

Introduction

Hello students!

Today we will be learning all about the Food web and what it is.

By the end of this quest, you will know:

-The different participants in an ecosystem

-Which animal eats what

-What the food chain actually is

Let's get to learning!

Task

I will break my class up into 6 groups; producers, consumers, herbivores, carnivores, omnivores and decomposers. They will go around to each table and pick a cut out of a certain participant of the ecosystem, color it and go to the next table and do the same until finished. When they are done, there will be a big piece of construction paper and they will glue they're participants on the paper in the order that the food web describes.

Producers- there will be cut outs of different plants and vegetables and the students will choose one & color it.

Consumers- There will be cut outs of animals such as lions and squirrels; or other things that do not produce their own food.

Herbivores-Examples of cut outs would be, rabbits and deer.

Omnivores- Chickens, pigs and bears will be a couple of animal cut outs for the students to color.

Decomposers- worms, bacteria and fungus will be some things students can choose from.

Process

Step 1- Students will be divided up into 6 groups (producers, consumers, carnivores, herbivores, omnivores, and decomposers).

Step2- Students will go to their first assigned table and pick an animal/thing from their group and color it.

Step 3- Students will switch tables and do the same thing until finishing all tables.

Step4- Students will go over to a big piece of construction paper and glue their cut outs in order from the food web onto the paper.

Step 5- We will come together as a class and discuss why it's in the specific order that it's in.

Step 6- We will hang up the construction paper(s) in the classroom on the back wall!

Conclusion

Congrats students! You have completed the journey in learning about the food web. If you ever forget the roles played by the different participants in the ecosystem, you can just look at the wall in the back of your classroom and see which animal eats what and be reminded of why it's like that!
