Pearl Harbor: Newspaper Article

Introduction

The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise to the United States that ended in thousands of deaths and entering the war. An event that happened nearly 75 years ago is something students can never experience but should have the opportunity to learn every aspect about it. This unit should create a feeling and interest within the students that they will never forget.

Task

Students will use the program Publisher to create a front page of a newspaper article of what happened the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Process

Open the lesson by saying, “imagine waking up the next morning after the attack, grabbing the newspaper, and reading what that front page said.” Have the students create a front-page article on what they think the headline would say, a picture, and the article. This is a chance for students to think creatively about what a journalist would write to capture people’s attention. State that research might need to be done and looking back to their notes they have.

Evaluation

Did students have trouble with writing skills when working on this article? After showing them the original, did students who struggled have a better understanding? Was their creativity used?

Conclusion

With about 10 to 15 minutes of class time left, have the students finish up. This may be an assignment that needs two class days to work on since some students might not have access to Publisher at home. When students are seated, show them a copy of the actual newspaper article of the attack.
