Introduction
Hey Second Graders!
Throughout the next four weeks you will be learning about the different regions of Africa.
To begin each week, we will focus on one or two regions. We will explore the countries, and flags, and culture of that region. Culture includes everything from what African people eat, to what they wear, and how they use art to express themselves.
To conclude this learning, you will be asked to create one artifact from one region to showcase at our leadership day. You will put this artifact on display, and be able to explain its significance to visitors at Odyssey Elementary School.
Let's get started!
Task
You are invited to participate in learning as much as you can about African culture. To conclude this learning, you will choose one artifact to create and display from one region of Africa. Be sure to choose something different from the other students in your class.
We will have an authentic audience visiting us for one whole day in May. During this time, you will showcase your artifact and explain its significance.
We cannot wait to see your creativity come to life! Remember to have fun, and ask lots of questions.
Process
Step 1: Use this website to find answers to the following general questions about Africa:
https://www.kids-world-travel-guide.com/africa-facts.html
-
How many countries are in Africa?
-
How big is Africa compared to other continents in the world??
-
How many people live on the continent of Africa?
-
How many people groups live in Africa?
-
How many languages are spoken in Africa?
Step 2: Now that you have an introduction to Africa, we will learn more about the Northern region.
Use this link (https://www.worldatlas.com/geography/regions-of-africa.html) to label the northern region of Africa. At a minimum, label the countries Egypt and Morocco.
Use this website, https://www.kids-world-travel-guide.com/egypt-facts.html, to find the flag of Egypt, and draw it in the country. Now find three fun facts about the country, and write them off to the side drawing a line back to the country.
Do the same for Morocco. using this website: https://www.kids-world-travel-guide.com/morocco-facts.html
Trace a thick line in marker around the countries in the northern region. Then lightly color the inside with a crayon/colored pencil in the same color.
Once complete, return to the websites. Compare and contrast American culture with African culture using the photographs.
Day 2: West Africa
As a class, list some tasks you complete on a normal day using your venn diagram note catcher.
-
What are your challenges?
-
What do you enjoy?
-
What/how often do you eat and drink?
-
What chores do you complete to help your family?
Today we are going to learn about life for some West African families. After watching a few videos, you will be asked to identify differences between your life, and the life of those in the videos.
When you have your class chart complete, you will add information you have learned about West Africa to the African map next to the western countries.
Then outline the West African countries in red looking at the map on the introduction page, and shade them with a crayon or colored pencil in red.

Week 3 - Central and East Africa
Rivers, Lakes, and Oceans: Analyze the map of Africa, and trace the bodies of water through the continent with a blue marker. Use the map found on this website: https://www.freeworldmaps.net/africa/geographical.html
Currency: Watch this video about currency in Africa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmVnYkLK4ZQ
How is their money different than american money?
Then complete the purchase sheet by subtracting the total spent on an item from the money used to purchase it.
Week 4: Southern Africa
Outline the countries of Southern Africa with brown, and shade them in.
Draw a line from Namibia to the side, and use this website https://www.kids-world-travel-guide.com/africa-facts.htmlto draw its flag. Also, find two facts that are important to the country, and write them by the flag.
Complete the same task for South Africa.
Representing a country!
Choose a flag to create from this page: https://previews.123rf.com/images/paunovic/paunovic1112/paunovic111200018/11669993-sammlung-von-afrikanischen-kontinent-mit-fahnen.jpg
Write the name of the country on that flag in nice, big handwriting. Find something interesting about the country using Google. You will be able to display this on Leadership Day.
