Introduction
Have you ever felt upset because your parents told you to put a game or toy back? They told you "no" because when they added the prices of what you needed and subtracted it from the total amount of money you had, there wasn't enough for the toy/game.
Guiding Questions:
- What are the values of different types of money: bills and coins?
- How do you count, add and subtract money?
- How do you buy and sell items with money?
Learning Objective:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify the values of different forms of money, add/subtract money, and buy/sell items with money in a real-world setting.
Florida Mathematic(B.E.S.T.) Standards (2nd grade)
- MA.2.M.2.2: Solve one- and two-step addition and subtraction real-world problems involving either dollar bills within $100 or coins within 100¢ using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately.
- MA.2.AR.1.1: Solve one- and two-step addition and subtraction real-world problems.
- MA.2.NSO.1.1: Read and write numbers from 0 to 1,000 using standard form, expanded form, and word form
Bloom's Taxonomy:
- Remember: Students recall the values of bills and coins.
- Understand: Student explain their buying and selling process.
- Apply: Students participate in buying and selling with money.
- Analyze: Students examine how money is used and added/subtracted.
- Evaluate: Students add and subtract money in real-world scenarios.
- Create: Students design a board showing their understanding.
Task
You will work in groups and become cashiers or customers. Each group will be given a setting, like a movie theater, and you will need to make a poster showing your answers to the given questions and act out the scenes. Your poster should:
- Have everyone's name
- Show your answers in standard form, word form, and expanded form.
- Show your work.
Everyone in the class will have a chance to be the cashier or the customer in your group.
Process
1. Class Learning Activity:
2. Group Activities: You will
- Separate into groups of 4-5
- Receive group setting from the teacher for the project
- Decide on your role:
- Cashier: Will explain how you add or subtract when selling
- Customer: Will explain how you add or subtract when buying
- Artist or everyone: Will Design and color the poster
- Everyone: Will either play as a cashier OR a customer
3. Present!
- Act out your scenarios and present your answers and board to the class.
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated based on the following:
| Excellent Job! | Almost | Needs Help | |
| Information on Poster | Poster contains all required information; including the names of all group members, the date, how the answers were found and answers in standard form, word form and expanded form. Poster is creative. | Poster contains most of the required information. Poster is somewhat creative. | Poster is missing most of the required information. Poster shows a lack of effort. |
| Scene Acting | Each group member played the role of cashier OR customer and fulfilled their roll completely. |
Most of the group members played the role of cashier OR customer but did not fulfil their roles completely. |
Some or none of the group members played the role of cashier OR customer and roles were not fulfilled completely |
| Teamwork | Students chose their roles early on and worked together to get their contributions to the board done. | Students did not choose their roles early on but did work together somewhat to contribute to the board. | Students had to be assigned their roles and did not work together to contribute to the board. |
| Presentation | Group presented the information clearly. | Group presented the information somewhat clearly. | Group did not present the information clearly. |
Conclusion
Congrats! You all made it through the projects and presentations. You now know how to add and subtract money and how to write and say numbers in standard form, expanded form and word form.
