Introduction
Task
Are They Real?
You will look at information about the Loch Ness monster and Bigfoot. Some of the information will tell why some people believe they are real and some of it will tell you why others think they do not exist.
After gathering information on both points of view (ways of thinking about these creatures), you will need to decide if you think either of these creatures really exist and why you think that way. You will give an oral report to your classmates on Friday, October 31st to let them know what you found out and what you decided.
Process
You Decide
1. You need to gather information about both of these creatures.
Let's start with the Loch Ness Monster.
Go to the websites listed below. Write down the information that you find on your Loch Ness Monster pages. You need to find out what people say it looks like and where they think it lives. Does it have any other names? Next write down some reasons why some people think the monster is real and some reasons why others think it is imaginary. You should try to find at least 5 reasons for each point of view.
80 Facts About the Loch Ness Monster
This is from an English newspaper, The Mirror. At the top of the article is a photo gallery. Click on it to see various photos people took of what they think is the Loch Ness monster. When you have seen the photos, click on the Close at the top right and then scroll down to see the list of facts.
Now we will look at Bigfoot.
Go to the websites listed below. Write down the information that you
find on your Bigfoot pages. You need to find out what people say it looks like and where they think it lives. Does it have any other names? Next write down some reasons why some people think the monster is real and some reasons why others think it is imaginary. You should try to find at least 5 reasons for each point of view.
2. Do you think either one of these is real? Are they both real? Is neither one real?
Loch Ness Monster - Read what you wrote about this creature. Think of everything you saw on the web pages. Do you think it exists? On your paper write what you think and why. Use some examples that help others understand your opinion.
Bigfoot - Read what you wrote about Bigfoot. Think of everything you saw on the web pages. Do you think it exists? On your paper write what you think. Why do you think that? Use some examples that help others understand your opinion.
3. Share with the class
Before you share with the class, you may want to draw a picture of each monster so the class has an idea of what they may look like. You can use the links below to help you figure out a way to draw them.
Draw a Gorilla - make it a little taller to make it look like Bigfoot
Now it is time to share what you found out. You will stand in front of the class and tell your classmates what you learned.
- You should tell them what each "monster" looks like (this would be a good time to show them your picture) and where it is supposed to live.
- Tell the class if you think the monster is real or not real.
- Tell them why you think that way.
Conclusion
Did you have fun learning about these creatures?
There are other cryptid, or hidden, creatures that people believe in. One day you might choose to learn about them also.
Who knows, someday we may find out for sure if they are real or not.
A long time ago people laughed when they heard of an animal that was a cross between a giraffe and a zebra. Now you can go to the zoo and see an okapi.
What will be the next animal someone discovers?
