Actual Monetary Currency of Great Gatsby

Introduction

To set the stage:

 Ahh the Roaring Twenties...You have just arrived in 1925 and during this time period the economy was thriving and people were splurging on everyday items that range from houses and cars to clothes and appliances. Much like Jay Gatsby in the Great Gatsby, the rich of this time period lived extravagantly and enjoyed fruitful spending on everyday items. As an economic historian you will begin your adventure.

This web quest will allow you to venture back in time to compare the economies of the 1920's to the 21st century and see if there are any differences.

Task

On your journey to the 1920's you will complete the following tasks...

1. Examine the economy in the 1920's and compare it to the economy of the 21st century. While doing this you will look into the prices of everyday items that people would purchase and compare them between the two time periods.  

2. By researching the economy of the 1920's, you will construct a graph visually comparing the differences in cost between items from the 1920's to the 21st century. Minimum of 20 items must be compared. 

3. Using your prior knowledge and the sources given to you below, if you found a difference in cost between items, you must tell why there is a difference and show the exact difference in items. 

4.You can choose to work alone or with a partner to complete this project. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Process

Use the previous links along with your own prior knowledge and outside sources to create a synopsis of the differences and similarities between the economies of the 1920's and the 21st century. The information in your synopsis should correlate with the information presented in the graph.

Now that you have explored the economy of the 1920's compared to the economy of the 21st century you should have a better understanding of the economic changes that have taken place over the years.

 

After completing this activity work with a partner to identify 3 things you thought went well or were good about this WebQuest, 2 things you would change, and 1 thing you found interesting. We will share our thoughts as a whole class at the end of the period.
