What was it like to be a pilgrim?

Introduction

What would life be like today if we didn't have TVs or computers? Long ago, when the pilgrims came to America, they lived a life very different from yours!  Let's travel back in time and find out how pilgrims lived!

Task

What was life like back in the time of the pilgrims? What types of games did they play?  What was their school and home like?  What chores did they do?  What clothing did they wear?  What food did they eat?  You may be surprised at what you find!

With a partner, you will research two areas of pilgrim life. After comparing and contrasting your life to pilgrim life, your group will decide which life is best and why!!

Your group will create a poster with pictures of the different areas you researched along with pictures of life today.  Then your group will give a presentation to the class describing what you have learned and which life is best!

This should be fun!  Let's Begin!!!

Process

You will be assigned to a group of six students.  In that group, you will begin by working with a partner to do research.

Partners will be assigned two areas of pilgrim life to research: food and clothing, home and chores, or school and games.

You and your partner will visit the resources provided below.

You will record at least three similarities and three differences for each subject between pilgrim children and you on the Venn diagram.

When everyone has finished, you will come back together as a group to share what you have learned.

Your group will create a poster with pictures of the different areas of pilgrim life as well as life today.  Label all pictures.

Your group will discuss which life is best and why and come to a consensus (all of you agree), or at least a majority (more than four of you agree).

Your group will present its findings to the class along with your group's opinion on which life is best and why.

Let's Go!!!

Together as a group, begin by listening to what life was like for pilgrim children, as told by kids just like you!!!

Pilgrim Life

You and your partner will be assigned two areas of pilgrim life to research.  Get together with your partner and begin by viewing the resources listed under your assigned areas. Be sure to have your Venn Diagram handy to write down at least three similarities and three differences for each subject of pilgrim life and your life today.

Show off your Venn diagram!

Now that you have learned about two areas of pilgrim life and how they compare to your life, get back together with your group and share what you have learned.

__________________________________________________________

Now comes the really fun part!

Everyone in the group will share their opinion on which life is better and why.  Once you come to a consensus (everyone agrees) or at least a majority (at least four of you agree) you will begin to create your poster.   The poster should represent all six areas of pilgrim life that you researched and shared.  You will draw and/or print pictures to represent the different areas in pilgrim times and today.  Write or type labels for each picture on your poster.  Don't forget a title and the names of all members of your group!

__________________________________________________________

Time to present!

Your group will present your findings and your poster to the class.  Describe the subject areas you researched and how they compare to your life today.  Now share your groups decision on which life is better and why.

Conclusion

Congratulations!

You have just learned what life was like back in the time of the pilgrims.  A lot has changed since then.  The way people live changes over time.  Life in the future, just as in the past, will be vastly different from our lives today.

Go share what you have learned with family and friends!!!!

Teacher Page

Students will learn about life in colonial times.  Specifically, they will compare their lives today with the lives of pilgrim children in the areas of food, clothing, games, schooling, homes, and chores.

This webquest was created to address content standards (English-Language Arts and History-Social Science).  It encourages students to develop their research and collaboration skills.  Students will work with partners and small groups to find out how their life compares with the lives of pilgrim children.  Using internet resources, a Venn diagram, and their creativity, they will share what they have learned with their class.
