5th Grade PE: The Importance of Physical Activity

Introduction

Hello Students,

This week we will be learning about physical activity.  By the end of this lesson you will know;

  • The different types of physical activity
  • How much physical activity you should be doing during the week
  • The reasons why physical activity is important

You are going to use what you learned to help you fill out a physical activity worksheet during the week.  The worksheet will help you see how much time you spent doing physical activity and identify the type of physical acitivities you did.

Task

After learning about physical activity in the 'Process' section you will have all the information you need to start tracking the types of physical activities and the time you spend doing each physical activity using the physical activity worksheet. Please follow the steps below.

  1. Make a copy of the physical activity worksheet in your google drive.
  2. Write down all of the physical activities you do for each day of the week and the amount of time you did each activity.
  3. Using the phsyical activity chart,  Identify the type of physical activity with the following letters;
  • A = aerobic
  • B = bone - strengthening
  • M = muscle - strengthening

Finally, tally the total time you spent doing physical activity for the week, the number of times you did each type of physical activity, and answer the questions.

Here is an example of an already completed physical activity worksheet:  Coach Lucy Physical Activity Worksheeet

Process

Please read the article "Physical Activity Facts' . This article was written by a health organization called the CDC, which stands for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

What is the CDC and why should we pay attention to them?

The CDC was created inorder to identify, prevent, and treat health issues affecting people of all ages.  Doctors, researchers, and scientists work together to come up with the best ways to keep people healthy.  Because they use evidence from research to make recommendations, we can trust their advice.

Take some notes:
Answer the following questions on a piece of paper as you read the text.  Don't throw away those notes because you will use this information to help you complete the physical activity worksheet.
  1. What are the benefits of phsyical activity?
  2. What are the consecuences of inactivity?
  3. What are the 3 categories of physical activity?
  4. How much aerobic activity should you do a day?
  5. How many days a week should you do muscle - strengthening activities?
  6. How many days a week should you do bone -strengthening activities?
  7. How does physical activity affect the ability for children to learn in school?

Conclusion

What have we learned?

It's important to do some type of physical activity everyday.  It not only helps keep our bodies healthy but also our minds.  Lots of movement counts as physical activity.

Next week you will use your physical activity worksheet to evaluate if you are doing enough physical activity during the week, and use this information to set some reachable fitness goals.

Stay healthy and happy!

-Coach Lucy
