Introduction
1. HAVING A GLUTEN FREE DIET
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. It is estimated 1.6 million people in the U.S follow a gluten free diet without being diagnosed with celiac - a severe intolerance. It is estimated that 18 million people in the U.S have some form of gluten intolerance either celiac or NCGS ( non-celiac gluten sensitivity).
Going gluten free can have some negative effects.
according to the Mayo Clinic going gluten free can lead to lower levels of iron, calcium, fibre, folate, thaimin, riboflavin and niacin. O
Prossesed gluten free foods will often be high in fat, sugar and calories while being low in fibre can lead to weight gain.
But there is no evidence that gluten is bad for your health unless you are celiac.
2. KOMBUCHA TEA
kombucha is a fermeated tea, made by adding a culture of bacteria and yeast to a tea solution, sugar and fruit juice and other flavouring can be added. Kombucha is highly acidic, containing sugar, B vitamins and antioxidants, as well as some acohol that results from the fermentation process.
Kombucha has been thought to cure things from digestive issues to arthritis to cancer. There have been a few animal studies on kombucha but no solid research has been done on people.
But some health benefits are likely since kombuacha, when raw or unpasteurised is rich in probiotics, good gut bacteria which has been proved to increase immunity and overall health.
The downside is that kombuchas probiotics do not survive the pasteurising process. Drinking it unpasteurised if it was not produced in a sanitary environment may pose a food safety threat especially in those who are pregnant or have compromised immune systems.
Kombucha may have some health benefits and is low in calories and sugar, but like all foods it should be used in moderation.
3. COLONICS
Colonics is a procedure where a tube is inserted into the rectum and flushes water into the colon pulling out built up toxins. This costs from $80-$100 per person.
Cleansing colons can be achieved by either colonics (hydrotherapy) or through methods such as fasting or supplements. But the main reason people should not get colonics is because there is no proven benefits. There is also a risk of infection if the equipment is not properly sturilized and damage to the colon.
the bacteria inside the colon has been shown to be important in our general health and to keep our colon healthy. Bacteria in your intestines which is largely determined by the bacteria in your colon can positively influence things such as metabolism and weight loss. Theoretically there is a risk of electrolyte imbalance in the blood in older patients who have kidney or heart problems.
Colonics have no proven benefit.
4. JUICING
Juicing is a easy way to add in more fruits and vegetables into your diet. Juicing does not replace a balanced diet.
When juicing you don’t get the whole fibre from the fruits and vegetables, juicing extract the juice and leave behind the pulp which contains fibre. Juicing can contain calories depending on what you put in the juice. Fruits often contain more calories than vegetables, so try to balance it out by adding some protein. Some protein rich foods include almond milk, Greek yogurt, flaxseed and peanut butter.
juicing can seem like a easy way to lose weight but it can easily backfire. On a juice-only diet you may lack protein or fibre wich can make you feel hungry, making it a lot more easier to go to foods such as cake or doughnut. Not anough protein can also lead to loss of muscle mass.
Studies have have shown that eating a plant- based diet can reduce risk of heart disease and cancer. But there is not many studies directly on juicing. There is some research on juicing and the immune system. But any immune benefits probably come from eating the fruits and vegetables whether they are juiced or not.
When juicing you don’t get all the fibre from the fruits and vegetables.
5. ORGANICS FOODS
Organic foods can cost up to fifty percenct more than conventional foods. The organic food business is booming: 70 percent of Americans buy organics foods, one quarter buy organic food every week.
Organic foods generally mean they are grown without synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilisers, biotechnology and irradiation ( a type of radiation wich is used to kill bacteria ). Organics foods may contain a higher nutritional value than conventional foods this is because of the absence of pesticides and fertilisers, plants boost their production of phytochemicals ( vitamins and antioxidants). Some studies have link pesticides in our food to everything from headaches to cancer to birth defects.
Pesticide comtamination is not much of a ceoncern for dairy and meats foods animals may consume some pesticides depending on their diet. Scientists are concerned about the antibiotics that animals may consume. Many of these antiobiotics are the same antibiotics giving to humans, an overdose of these drugs may lead to bacteria creating a resistance, making it less effective for fighting infection.
Many people believe that organic food tastes better than conventional food. This is true! A 2014 Trudy shows that foods with high antioxidants might inhance the organoleptic qualities ( its aroma, taste, and even the sensation when you are eating it ).
Organics foods taste better but are more expensive.

Gluten free:
Celiac is a incurable disease where the body’s immune system acts adnormally to gluten causing small bowl damage. The small finger like projections inside the small bowl ( villi ) become inflamed and flattened.
Gluten free advertising is often through magazines and online. This way of advertising is successful while the fad is popular because it is easy to access and share. When that fad fades away these magazines and online posts will not be visited or bought as often, 1% of healthy Americans are affected by celiac disease.
Negative affects of going gluten free without being celiac can lead to low levels of iron, fibre, calcium, folate, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin according to the mayo clinic.

Colonics:
Colonics is a procedure where a tube is inserted into the rectum to flush water into the colon to cleanse it.
Colonics is advertised by television and gossip. famous celebities that tried colonics includeopra winfrey and maddona. this ad will likely fade after more reseasrch is done to prove weather colonics has any beinifits or if it is dangerous.
negative effects includeif colonics include risk of infection or damag to the colon. there is no prove benifit.

Juicing:
juicing is a continuous fad. It is a easy way to get more fruits and vegetables into your diet.
juicing recipes are easy to find scince that are in magazines and all over the internet. Juicing is popular because it is easy to find recipes, easy to make and it is healthy. These recipes show how quick and healthy the juicing may be but they do not mention that juicing can contain calories depending on what is in the juice.
going on a juice only diet can lead to lack of protein and fibre wich can make the person hungry making it easier for them to resort to foods like doughnuts and cake. Loss of protein can also lead to loss of muscle mass.

the fad I am most likely to try is going gluten free because I am gluten sensitive, and the fad I am most likely to not try is colonics because it costs so much money ( it can costs form $80-$100 per person ) and because there is no proven benefits.

COLONICS
Pamela Kilah- 65 years old- female
Ms Kilah went into a regular colonics clinic in Brisbane. She decided to try colonics after hearing about the health benefits online and after one of her daughter gave it a go and said it went fine. The procedure normally goes for and hour and a half normally including an half hour consultant.
Ms Kilah was told what to do and was sent to a room. Ms Kilah administers the tube herself and within the next few minutes she was in intense pain. After half and hour the clinic called and ambulance. All the colon matter and water wich was supossed to be extinguished during the procedure had instead leaked all through her body. After arriving at the hospital the surgeon said he had to do a Hartmann’s prodecure and a stoma, so a part of the colon was removed. In this case the procedure did clean out the colon but it was cleaned into the rest of the body.

She claimed she constantly felt cold and had uncontrollable twitching in her stomach, chest and thighs. Her divorced husband took her to the A&E. Blood tests showed Christine had low levels of potassium- a mineral obtained from the diet that helps the digestive system to work and regulate the heart, kidneys and muscle contractions. The doctors claimed it may of been from the colonics.

Worksheet 5:
Conclusion
From this assignment I have learned to research and found out more about diets
before trying them, because in the past this has had consequences that are dangerous and could be fatal ( Worksheet 3 ).
Diffrent companies will try diffrent strategy’s to convince people there product or diets are safe. They will try to convince people through adds, magazines and gossip.
For the people trying diffrent fads research and found out about diets and products before trying them, something the companies could do is do more trials to ensure it is safe before putting them in the market.
