3D Shapes

Introduction

Everything around you is a 3D Shape! Wouldn't it be awesome if you knew all of the 3D shapes and could identify them with ease? This WebQuest is to help you be able to identify and name all 3D shapes in real life and math scenarios. The lesson is geared towards 1st grade, and it should take them about 50 minutes to complete. This WebQuest focuses on: spheres, cones, cylinders, rectangular prisms, and triangular prisms.

Task

First, I will introduce all the shapes with a YouTube video over all 3D shapes. Then, I am going to hold up 3D figures at the front of the classroom while I identify and explain each one. I will ask the students after each one if they understand why that shape is identified by its name.

The students will then be asked to create a list of 10 real life examples of each shape in their groups. Next, the students will be given 6 pieces of candy shaped like each of the 3D shapes and they must label and Identify which food item matches with the 3D shape. Then the students will complete a 3D shapes worksheet on their own.

Process

During this lesson the students will first work with me to learn all of the shapes. Once I feel confident they can continue without me, they will complete the list of examples, the food activity, and the 3D shapes worksheet. I will separate the students into groups of 2 to complete he list of 10 examples. One of the students will be allowed to look up some examples while another writes them down. They will then label what shape each of their examples is. (For example: Beach ball - Sphere). Once the students have completed this they will work independently to complete the food activity and the 3D shapes worksheet.

  1. The students should be able to correctly identify all shapes
  2. The students should be able to give real life examples of each shape
  3. The student should be able to draw and label each of the shapes

Evaluation

  1. What is the difference between a 3D shape and 2D shape?

  1. If there are 4 rectangular prisms how many square faces do they have in total? How many rectangular faces?
    1. 4 Square, 12 Rectangular
    2. 10 Square, 16 Rectangular
    3. 8 Square, 16 Rectangular
    4. 8 Square, 12 Rectangular
  2. Short Answer- Think of items around your house and give me 5 examples of 3D shaped items.

    4. True/ False : A beach ball is the shape of a sphere.

  1. What 3D shape has only one face and comes to a point?
    1. Cone
    2. Sphere
    3. Triangular Prism
    4. Cube

  1. How many faces, edges, and vertices does a rectangular prism have?

Edges:_______.  Faces:__________ Vertices:__________

Conclusion

In conclusion, the students should have a solid understanding of what the 3D shapes are and where they can be found in everyday life. The. should be able to label and identify all of the 3D shapes talked about within this lesson with no hesitation.

(6)  Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to analyze attributes of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional solids to develop generalizations about their properties. The student is expected to:

(E)  identify three-dimensional solids, including spheres, cones, cylinders, rectangular prisms (including cubes), and triangular prisms, and describe their attributes using formal geometric language;
