PROTECT THE HEART

Introduction

Imagine that you are a student nurse assigned to a community health program.

During your community exposure, you notice that many adults are not aware of the factors that can increase their risk of cardiovascular disease. Some patients have unhealthy eating habits, lack physical activity, smoke, or do not regularly check their blood pressure.

Your clinical instructor asks your group to develop a simple health-education material that can help patients understand how to protect their heart.

Before you can create the material, you need to investigate:

What puts a person at risk for cardiovascular disease, and what can people do to protect their heart?

In this WebQuest, you will explore cardiovascular disease, identify its risk factors, discover ways to prevent it, and examine how nurses can help individuals and families maintain cardiovascular health.

Cardiovascular diseases involve the heart and blood vessels and are a major global health concern. Important modifiable risk factors include tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, harmful alcohol use, and obesity.

Task

You are now part of a community health nursing team.

Your group will investigate cardiovascular health and create a one-page health-education infographic for patients and families.

Your infographic must answer these questions:

1. What is cardiovascular disease?
2. What are its major risk factors?
3. Which risk factors can be changed?
4. How can people protect their heart?
5. What warning signs should people recognize?
6. How can nurses help prevent cardiovascular disease?

Your final infographic should use simple, patient-friendly language and information from reliable sources.

Process

Step 1 – Form Your Team

Work in groups of 3–4 students.

Assign the following roles:

  • Researcher – finds relevant information.
  • Evidence Checker – checks whether the information is accurate.
  • Health Educator – converts technical information into simple patient-friendly language.
  • Designer/Presenter – organizes the infographic and prepares the presentation.

Everyone must contribute to the final product.

Step 2 – Explore Cardiovascular Disease

Research and answer:

  • What is cardiovascular disease?
  • What parts of the cardiovascular system are involved?
  • Why is cardiovascular disease an important health concern?
  • What are some common cardiovascular diseases?

Step 3 – Identify the Risk Factors

Create two categories:

Non-modifiable risk factors

  • Age
  • Family history/genetics
  • Other factors supported by your sources

Modifiable risk factors

  • Tobacco use
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Physical inactivity
  • Obesity
  • Harmful alcohol use
  • Other factors supported by your sources

Then answer:

Which risk factors can a person change through lifestyle or health-related behaviors?

Step 4 – Discover Ways to Protect the Heart

Research practical ways people can reduce cardiovascular risk.

Choose at least five recommendations that can realistically be explained to patients.

For example:

  • Eat a healthier diet.
  • Be physically active.
  • Avoid tobacco.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Monitor blood pressure.
  • Have appropriate health screenings.
  • Follow prescribed treatment for existing conditions.
  • Seek medical attention when concerning symptoms occur.

Step 5 – Think Like a Nurse

Imagine that you are educating a patient who has several cardiovascular risk factors.

Discuss:

“What information should a nurse prioritize when teaching this patient, and why?”

Consider:

  • Health literacy
  • Lifestyle modification
  • Prevention
  • Medication adherence when applicable
  • Early detection
  • When to seek medical attention
  • Patient and family involvement

Step 6 – Create Your Infographic

Your infographic should contain these five sections:

1. Know Your Heart

Briefly explain cardiovascular disease.

2. Know Your Risk

Show modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors.

3. Protect Your Heart

Give practical prevention tips.

4. Know the Warning Signs

Provide appropriate warning signs and emphasize seeking prompt medical attention when necessary.

5. The Nurse's Role

Explain how nurses contribute to cardiovascular health promotion and disease prevention.

Step 7 – Check Your Work

Before submitting, ask:

☐ Is our information accurate?
☐ Did we use reliable sources?
☐ Did we distinguish modifiable and non-modifiable factors correctly?
☐ Is our language easy for patients to understand?
☐ Are our recommendations practical?
☐ Did we cite our sources?
☐ Is the infographic organized and readable?
☐ Did every group member contribute?

Step 8 – Present Your Work

Each group will have 3–5 minutes to present its infographic.

During the presentation, explain:

  1. Your most important cardiovascular risk factor
  2. One practical prevention strategy
  3. One important warning sign
  4. The role of nurses in cardiovascular health promotion

This structure follows the standard WebQuest approach: learners investigate curated resources, complete an authentic task, and produce a meaningful output rather than simply answering a worksheet.

Evaluation

Criteria 4 – Excellent 3 – Good 2 – Developing 1 – Beginning
Accuracy of Information Information is accurate, relevant, and well-supported Mostly accurate with minor errors Some information is inaccurate or incomplete Many inaccuracies are present
Use of Resources Uses several credible sources and appropriately acknowledges them Uses credible sources with minor citation issues Uses limited sources or has incomplete citations Sources are missing or unreliable
Content & Understanding Clearly explains CVD, risk factors, prevention, and nursing role Covers most required content Some required content is missing Major content is missing
Patient-Friendly Communication Information is clear, simple, and appropriate for patients Mostly clear and understandable Some information is difficult to understand Language is inappropriate or unclear
Creativity & Organization Highly organized, attractive, and easy to follow Organized and visually appealing Some organizational problems Difficult to follow
Teamwork & Presentation All members participate and presentation is clear Most members participate Uneven participation Little evidence of teamwork

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have completed the Protect the Heart WebQuest.

Through this activity, you explored cardiovascular diseases, identified modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, investigated ways to promote cardiovascular health, and considered the important role nurses play in patient education and disease prevention.

Remember that nursing is not only about caring for patients after illness occurs. Nurses also have an important role in health promotion, prevention, education, and early recognition of health risks.

After completing the WebQuest, answer the following questions:

  1. What is one new thing you learned about cardiovascular health?
  2. Which cardiovascular risk factor do you think is most important for nurses to discuss with patients? Explain your answer.
  3. How can you use what you learned in your future nursing practice?
  4. What did you learn about working with your group?
  5. If you could improve your infographic, what would you change?
