Introduction
Hello! Have you ever wondered how plants go from a tiny seed to a big plant? Plants are everywhere around us on Earth and today we are going to learn how they grow and what they need to survive.
In this WebQuest, you will explore parts of a plant, how they are made, and the stages of a plants life cycle.
Guiding Questions:
- How does a seed grow into a plant?
- What do plants need to grow?
- What are the different parts of a plant?
Learning Objectives: By the end of this WebQuest, students will have the ability to identify and point the different parts of a plant, list the stages of a plants cycle in order, and explain what plants need to grow.
Florida State Standards: Connects to Florida's kindergarten science benchmarks by observing living things and understanding what it needs for survival.
Blooms Taxonomy: Students will be able to remember plant parts, explain what plants need, and apply their knowledge.
Task
Process
Step 1: Learn about plants using the canva presentation
Step 2: Give each student in your group a special job
- Plant researcher: Finds out what the plant needs to grow strong
- Plant part expert: Learns about the all the parts of a plant to share with the group
- Artist: Draws the plant and labels each part and their job
- Presenter: Explains to the class what the group worked on
Step 3: Share your ideas
Have a piece of paper filled with information to share with the rest of the group. Write down facts about plants. Each member of the group will use this paper to brainstorm.
STEP 4: Plant a seed
Your teacher will help you plant a bean seed in a small cup filled in soil. Add water and place it in the perfect spot to receive sunlight. Draw a picture of your seed and add what you think the seed will look like as it grows. Be sure to observe your seed over the next several days.
Step 5: Present your findings to the class
After your seed is all done growing, you and your teammates will present your findings to the class and decide whether your drawing prediction was accurate.
Step 6: Reflect
Think about everything you learned over the course of this project. Answer the following questions
- How does a seed grow into a plant?
- What do plants need to grow?
- What are the different parts of a plant?
- What was your favorite part of the activity?
Evaluation
| Criteria | 4 - Excellent | 3 - Good | 2 - Needs improvement | 1 - Needs Help |
| Plant Knowledge | Is able to identify plant parts and explains what plants need to grow | Understands most plant parts | Understands some plant parts | Has trouble understanding plant parts and needs |
| Presentation | The group is engaged, accurate information and clear drawings | Slightly less engaged | Presentation needs more focus | Missing major part of presentation |
| Teamwork | Works well with classmates and contributes to project | Usually works well with classmates | Sometimes participates in group work | Needs help working with the group |
| Planting Activity | Follows steps and engages with predictions | Completes most steps and makes predictions | Needs reminders to follow certain steps | Needs help to complete the steps |
| Total Possible Points | 16 Points | |||
Conclusion
Goodjob! You have completed this project and explored the world of plants!
You discovered different parts of a plant, how a plant survives, and how to plant a seed! How you know that plants need water, sunlight, air, and nutrients to grow. You also learned how to work together in a group setting, share ideas, and teach others what you found.
Enrichment Activity: When you get home, start a plant journal. Draw a picture of your seed each week and see how it will change as you grow. Write and tell someone one new thing about your plant that you noticed is changing.
