"Have you ever noticed how different every character in a story looks. Some characters have red hair, some have green eyes, and some wear bright clothes. The illustrator works hard on every detail to help us understand who they are. That is why today we will be reading "If you give a mouse a cookie" by Laura Joffe Numeroff. I want you to pay very close attention to what the character looks like and wears in the story. We will be using all this information later in a fun activity".
Task
Students will use their district devices to draw or record a video of a physical drawing. This drawing will be of the charater in the story read to the class. Students will be encouraged to focus on all details of the character. Alongside this, students will label the drawing with specific physical attributes (at least four). Students will then record themselves describing the character and displaying their labels. Students may work in groups and assign roles to artist, speaker, and labeler.
Process
- Students will listen to assigned text
- Turn and talk- Students will talk amongst themselves about the character and their physical attributes. Promting questions such as "what does the chatacter look like" "what was the character wearing" and "what color was his fur" will be asked.
- Describe the activity.
- Place students in groups of three and have students assign their roles (Artist, speaker, leabeler).
- Students draw or use https://www.autodraw.com/ to render a drawing of the character.
- Place word bank of decriptions on the board/ read them aloud
- The labeler of the group will either write words from the wordbank or come up with their own and place them appropriatly
- The speaker will use a recording app such as flip to present their drawings and labels.
- Students will submit their recording on a shared document (links to the document and step by step instructions will be provided..
- Presentations will be shared on the eboard.
