MISSION: EXPLORE THE HUMAN BODY

Introduction

Welcome, Young Health Scientists!

Have you ever wondered how your heart keeps beating, how your lungs provide oxygen, or how your brain controls the activities of your body?

The human body is made up of different organ systems that work together to keep us alive and healthy. Each system has specific functions, but no system works completely alone.

For this WebQuest, you will become a Young Health Scientist. Your mission is to investigate one human body system, discover how it works, and explain how it works together with another body system.

Are you ready to explore the amazing human body?

Task

You will work individually or in a group of 3–4 students.

Your group will choose one human body system from the following:

  • Cardiovascular System
  • Respiratory System
  • Digestive System
  • Nervous System
  • Skeletal System
  • Muscular System
  • Endocrine System
  • Urinary System
  • Immune/Lymphatic System

Your group will conduct online research and create a 5–7 slide digital presentation.

Your presentation must include:

  1. Name of the body system
  2. Major organs
  3. Functions of the major organs
  4. How the system works
  5. One common disease or disorder
  6. Causes or risk factors of the disorder
  7. How the system interacts with another body system
  8. At least three reliable sources

Process

Step 1 – Form Your Team

Form a group of 3–4 members. Assign responsibilities such as:

  • Researcher
  • Information organizer
  • Presentation designer
  • Presenter

Step 2 – Choose Your Body System

Select one body system from the list provided by your teacher.

Step 3 – Conduct Your Research

Use the recommended online resources to gather information.

While researching, answer these questions:

  • What are the major organs of the system?
  • What are the functions of these organs?
  • How does the system work?
  • What happens when the system does not function properly?
  • What common disease or disorder affects the system?
  • What are its causes or risk factors?
  • How does this system interact with another body system?

Step 4 – Evaluate Your Sources

Not everything found online is reliable. Before using information, consider:

Authority: Who created the information?

Accuracy: Is the information supported by scientific evidence?

Currency: Is the information updated?

Purpose: Is the website intended to educate, sell, or persuade?

Step 5 – Create Your Presentation

Use PowerPoint, Canva, Google Slides, or another approved presentation tool.

Your presentation should be clear, accurate, organized, and visually appealing.

Step 6 – Present Your Findings

Each group will present its findings to the class.

Each presentation should take approximately 5–7 minutes.

Step 7 – Reflection

After the presentation, answer:

“Why is it important for healthcare professionals and ordinary individuals to understand how the body's organ systems work together?”

Evaluation

Your work will be evaluated using the following rubric:

Criteria Points
Accuracy and completeness of information 25
Explanation of organs and their functions 20
Explanation of interaction between body systems 20
Research and use of reliable sources 15
Creativity and organization of presentation 10
Oral presentation 10
TOTAL 100

Performance Levels

90–100 – Excellent
Information is accurate, complete, well-organized, and presented creatively. Reliable sources are properly used.

80–89 – Very Good
Information is generally accurate and organized, with only minor areas needing improvement.

75–79 – Good
The required information is present but some explanations need improvement.

Below 75 – Needs Improvement
Information is incomplete, unclear, or contains significant inaccuracies.

Conclusion

Mission Accomplished, Young Health Scientists!

You have explored one of the amazing systems of the human body and discovered how it works together with other systems to maintain life.

Remember that the human body is not simply a collection of separate organs. It is an interconnected system in which every part has an important role.

Understanding these connections can help us appreciate the importance of maintaining good health and can provide a strong foundation for future studies in science and healthcare.
