Miss Nelson is Missing

Introduction

Just like in our story Miss Nelson is Missing, Mrs. Hickman is missing and she is going to need your help. Her kids need to learn about non-fiction text features. They also need to know how they help the reader as they read.  She needs you to teach this to her class while she is missing. She wants you to create a presentation that will teach the students different text features they will see in non-fiction books.

Text features are to non-fiction as to story elements are to fiction. Text features help the reader make sense of what they are reading and are the building blocks for text structure (Spence, B. 2017)

Task

You will first complete a Venn Diagram comparing fiction to non-fiction. This will show Mrs. Hickman that you really have a lot of knowledge about the different genre of books.

Second, you will be researching and completing a graphic organizer on text features that author's use when writing non-fiction texts. You will be using websites and books in the classroom to help you with your research.

Third, you will create a presentation of your information. You may chose to use Google slides, Kids PicCollage or a Stapleless book.

Process

1. Complete a Venn Diagram by clicking on the link below. You will be comparing fiction books to non-fiction books. Show Mrs.Hickman what authors' use in each type of book.

2. Research non-fiction text features while using the graphic organizer. You can use the following websites and any books through out the room. You need to make sure that you write out the name of the text features and a explanation and picture of the text feature.
