Step 1: Jack Up and Open Up Your carThe first thing we want to do is, we want to jack up our car so that we can work comfortably under it and get a light under there. There are many ways to do this, such as Jack stands like the ones Here: Now that we have our car safely propped up so that we can operate under the car, we can get to actually changing the oil! Most modern cars have plastic trays right below the gas filter and tank, so once we locate that plastic tray on the bottom side of the car, let's unscrew it and put it somewhere safe so we can put it back on at the end. |
Step 2: Unplug Your Oil And Drain ItNow that we have our Car Propped up and covered off, let us get to unplugging your oil! Grab a container to empty your oil into and place it below the oil tank, which should be under where the cover was. Now that we have the container situated, let's unplug our oil! All you have to do is grab the small protrusion that may look like a screw and just screw it counterclockwise take it off and place it somewhere safe, draining the oil. Allow the car to drain for about 5 minutes or until barely anything is coming out. |
Step 3: Take Off The Old FilterThe oil filter should be a smallish cylindrical component screwed onto the engine. once you locate it, and start loosening it, it should start leaking oil. slowly loosen it and let all of the oil stop leaking, then you can take it off completely and put it near your oil plug. Once removed make sure there isn't a rubber ring left behind, if there is, take it off as you need this gone for your new filter. and then wipe down the area so you get the oil up. |
Step 4: Drain Plug Back in, New Filter OnPut back the drain plug and tighten it until it's snug, but don't try and make it extremely tight. Overtightening can cause damage to the oil pan and drain plug. Put some effort into tightening it, but not all of your strength. Certain vehicles use a washer behind the drain plug that must be replaced when you reinstall the plug. For cars like those, you must check your owner's manual. Next, take your new oil filter and apply a light dab of oil around the rubber on the top of the filter. This will help create a proper seal as you tighten the filter. The same rule as before applies to the filter too. Do not try and tighten till you can't, get it in there snugly and leave it alone. |
Step 5: Fill It Back Up with OilOnce you have replaced the oil filter and drain plug, Make sure you put back your undertray and lower the car back to the ground. From here you need to open the hood and remove the oil cap. The oil cap should have an oil can symbol on it. Using a funnel, because you don't want oil all over your front, fill the engine with your needed amount of oil for the car. |
Step 6: Check the Oil Level and check for LeaksAfter waiting a few minutes for the oil to settle, You have to check your oil levels. Checking your oil is simple. Pull out the dipstick which is usually on the left side of your engine, wipe away all the old oil with a towel, reinsert the dipstick, and remove the dipstick. You can now look and confirm that the oil is lined up with the full marking on the tip of the dipstick. Finally, start the vehicle and let it Sit for a while, and warm up. Make sure to check for leaks under the vehicle and around the oil filter. |
