Introduction

Vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet and are also an important source of income for many Filipino farmers. However, growing healthy vegetables requires proper knowledge about soil preparation, seed selection, planting, watering, pest management, and harvesting.

In this WebQuest, you will become a young agricultural researcher and farmer. You will explore reliable Internet resources to learn how vegetables are properly grown. You will then use what you have learned to create a simple vegetable production plan.

Task

Your task is to develop a Vegetable Production Plan for a small school or backyard garden.

Choose one vegetable crop, such as tomato, eggplant, pechay, okra, or squash.

Your final output must include:

  1. Name and picture of the vegetable crop
  2. Suitable soil and environmental conditions
  3. Seed or planting material needed
  4. Proper land or container preparation
  5. Planting procedure
  6. Watering and fertilization requirements
  7. Common pests and diseases
  8. Ways to control pests and diseases
  9. Proper harvesting method
  10. A simple drawing or layout of your proposed vegetable garden

Present your production plan through a poster, infographic, PowerPoint presentation, or digital document.

Process

Step 1 – Choose Your Crop

Select one vegetable crop that you would like to grow.

Step 2 – Research

Use the provided online resources to find information about your chosen crop. Record important information about its planting, care, and harvesting.

Step 3 – Study the Growing Requirements

Determine the following:

  • Soil requirements
  • Sunlight requirements
  • Water requirements
  • Recommended planting method
  • Fertilizer requirements

Step 4 – Identify Problems

Research at least two common pests or diseases that may affect your crop. Explain how farmers can prevent or control them.

Step 5 – Create Your Garden Plan

Draw a simple garden layout showing where your selected crop will be planted. Label the rows, spacing, water source, and other important areas.

Step 6 – Prepare Your Final Output

Organize your research and garden plan into a poster, infographic, PowerPoint presentation, or digital document.

Step 7 – Present and Reflect

Present your production plan to the class. Explain why you selected the crop and how your plan can help produce healthy vegetables.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated based on six criteria: research content, agricultural knowledge, garden plan, use of resources, presentation, and reflection. Each criterion will be rated from 1 to 4 points, for a total of 24 points. A score of 4 (Excellent) means the work is complete, accurate, well-organized, practical, creative, and demonstrates a strong understanding of vegetable production. A score of 3 (Good) means the work is mostly complete and accurate and shows a good understanding of the topic. A score of 2 (Fair) means some important information or details are missing and the student demonstrates only a basic understanding of the topic. A score of 1 (Needs Improvement) means the work is incomplete, unclear, contains limited information, or shows little understanding of the topic. Students are expected to use reliable resources, present their vegetable production plan clearly, and provide a meaningful reflection about what they learned from the WebQuest activity.

Teacher Introduction

This WebQuest is designed to help Grade 8 learners develop basic knowledge and skills in vegetable production through inquiry-based and Internet-supported learning. Students will research a vegetable crop, identify its growing requirements, investigate common pests and diseases, and develop a simple vegetable production plan.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the WebQuest, students should be able to identify the basic requirements for growing vegetables, explain proper planting and crop-care practices, identify common pests and diseases and their control measures, use reliable online agricultural resources, and develop a practical vegetable production plan.

Teaching Strategy

The activity uses WebQuest and inquiry-based learning. Students work independently or in small groups to gather information from selected online resources, analyze the information, and apply what they have learned by creating a vegetable production plan.

Teacher's Role

The teacher will introduce the activity, explain the instructions, guide students in selecting reliable sources, monitor their progress, answer questions, and provide feedback. The teacher should also encourage students to connect their research with actual agricultural practices in their community.

Materials and Resources

Students will need access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone with an Internet connection. They may also use school textbooks, agriculture modules, and teacher-provided resources.
