Have you ever wondered what happens to a plastic water bottle after you throw it away? Every minute, over one million plastic bottles are purchased around the world. The United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) has just appointed your team to serve as international consultants. Your mission is to investigate the global plastic waste problem, analyze its impact on ocean ecosystems and human health, and pitch a realistic, innovative solution to reduce plastic pollution in your local community or region.

2. Task

Your team will act as an environmental consultancy group. Together, you will research the lifecycle of plastics, assess their environmental impact, and propose a comprehensive Plastic Action Plan.

Your final team deliverable will consist of two parts:

A Digital Presentation (Google Slides or Canva): A 7–10 slide pitch deck presenting your findings and proposed solution to the local city council or school board.

An Action Brief / Infographic: A visual summary or 1-page digital brochure highlighting key statistics, alternative materials, and individual steps community members can take.

Students will work in teams of 4. Each member will assume a specialized role during the research phase before coming together to construct the final presentation.

The Marine Biologist: Focuses on how plastic waste affects marine life, microplastics in food webs, and ecosystem degradation.

The Environmental Engineer: Focuses on plastic alternative materials (bioplastics, circular materials), recycling technology, and waste management solutions.

The Economist / Business Analyst: Focuses on the costs of plastic production vs. alternatives, consumer habits, and financial incentives for businesses to reduce waste.

The Policy Advocate: Focuses on existing environmental laws, successful global bans/policies, and public education strategies.
