Explore 3 ways to throw!

Introduction

Your class is opening a Throwing Academy, and you are the coaching team! An object can travel overhand, sidearm or underhand. How does your arm move in each throw? When might you choose one instead of another? Your mission is to investigate all three and teach another fourth grader what you discover.

Task

Work in teams of three to create a Throwing Academy coaching guide: a paper poster or 3-slide presentation, with one section for each throw. Every teammate researches all three throws and helps explain the final guide.

Include for each throw A description in your own words, a labeled drawing of the arm’s path, 3 short technique cues, one game or situation where it could be used, and the source name and link.

Also include One similarity and one difference among the throws, plus 2 rules for safe practice.

Process

1.  Form your coaching team Choose a Navigator to open links, an Evidence Recorder to take notes, and a Coach to guide discussion. Rotate roles after each throw so everyone searches, records and explains.

2. Investigate the resources Open the links below. Read the assigned sections and examine any demonstrations. Answer: Where does the arm travel? Which foot steps toward the target? What happens after release? What 3 reminders would help a beginner?

Resource A  •  PE Specialist  •  Overhand and underhand throwing cues

Resource B  •  The PE Specialist •  How to throw a frisbee

3. Put it in your own words Read, look away, explain, then write. Do not copy sentences. Label an arm-path drawing for each throw. For a game example, explain your choice; identify it as your team’s idea if it is not in the source.

4. Discuss: What is shared by all three throws? How do their arm paths differ? Which throw would you choose for a gentle toss to a nearby target, and why?

5. Teach and submit Give a 2-minute team explanation. Each student explains one throw and names a cue. Submit the coaching guide and research notes. Your teacher also observes each student’s practice and contribution.
