Introduction

Communicable Diseases
Communicable or infectious diseases are diseases that you can catch. Some diseases are transferred between people, while others can be caught from animals, insects or the environment. These diseases may be caught via direct contact with someone or something, or they may be airborne and breathed in. Often, there are ways to manage outbreaks of communicable diseases, and there are things you can do to prevent catching these diseases.
Task
You are a reporter for a local community television station. Your task is to create a news report which seeks to inform people about a communicable/infectious disease of your choice.
Your report must be 1-2 minutes in length and will be video recorded using an iPad.
Process
1) Find a partner to work with.
2) Select one communicable disease
- Influenza (the flu)
- Chicken pox
- School sores
- Ringworm
- Head lice
- Slapped cheek
3) Using the websites listed at the bottom of the page to research your disease. You must include:
- A description of your chosen disease
- Symptoms of the disease
- How the disease is contracted
- How to avoid/prevent catching the disease
- What to do if you have the disease (i.e. Can you go still go to school? Should you see a doctor?)
- How to treat the disease
- Any other interesting information
4) Write a news report script that is 1-2 minutes in length.
5) Decide on your roles. One person must be the news reporter, and the other will be the director/cameraman.
6) Rehearse your dialogue before video recording your news report using an iPad. You may use any props or costumes that are available in the classroom.

This webquest is designed to support students to develop their understanding of communicable diseases. In particular, students will learn about the symptoms, prevention and treatment of a disease of their choice, which aligns with the Health and Physical Education content descriptor ACPPS036: "Students will learn to Identify and practise strategies to promote health, safety and wellbeing" (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, 2014).
