News Broadcast WebQuest

Introduction

You will create a  news broadcast covering many of the current events that we have discussed from CNN student news.  You will also have the opportunity to report on other interesting stories that are in the news today. This project will require you to read, research, analyze, evaluate, and present information.  You will be working in groups, however, you will be graded on your specific role and tasks. Please proceed to the next links in order to get more detailed information.

Task

Your assignment will lead you to research, explore, and report on stories that have been discussed on CNN student news, as well as other current events out in the world today.  Through your (mock) interviewing, researching, and picture gathering, you are expected to present a 10-12 minute news broadcast to the class displaying your in-depth analysis. The 3 or 4-person news crew/cast will consist of a studio anchor, one field reporter, one camera/picture person, and a social commentator. As you already know, the groups of four have already been assigned, so now it is up to each individual person to chose a position that best suites their personality and ability. Remember that not everyone can be a cameraperson; each role is equally important! Also, the broadcast will be conducted in front of a live studio audience, and be prepared for questions after the telecast if they arise. (If you feel more comfortable taping your broadcast, and presenting it on the Smartboard on presentation day, that is fine as well.)

Your broadcast must include a story on :

(1) Any current event from CNN student news

(2) Sports, Entertainment or Lifestyle

(3) Weather (can be fictional)

(4) Technology, Social Media, Science (Mrs. Smith's students must do a story related to research you've done on Sharks)

Process

In order to have a successful broadcast, each member of the team is responsible for his/her own task(s). After each member has completed his or her task, it is time to collaborate and establish a coherent and effective order for the presentation. Also, each news team is responsible for turning in a folder of each member’s findings, interviews, pictures, and order of telecast. Do not forget to place your name on each one of your pieces. No name; no credit. The group roles are as follows:

*Field Reporter

Responsible for writing and conducting interviews outside the studio. On any given location. Make sure that you script out both the questions and the answers, and practice them. The interview should be in conjunction with what you learned from your research. Please avoid sounding like you are repeating verbatim from your sources. Remember that this is your interview. Interviews are to be lively, well organized, and clever because they will help you . Feel free to either tape record the inteconvey your story to the audience.   You will conduct a “live” interview during the broadcast. Do not forget to turn in your script with all Q&A’s and research with your name and role in your group's folder.  This will be weighed in your overall grade.

*Studio Anchor

You are basically the leader of the group. The broadcast begins and ends with you. Your job is to read part of the story in the studio during the broadcast. You must be extremely knowledgeable about your team’s topics. You should know just as much as the field reporter. With the information that you find on the web, extract important facts and team up with the field reporter to decide what material is to be covered between the both of you. You will need to be a well-organized individual because you will have to plan the order of the telecast. When you have decided the order of the telecast, turn that sheet into Mrs.Callum.  Do not forget to place all of your findings and an extra copy of the order into your group folder with your name and role.

*Cameraperson

Your job is to provide the pictures for the broadcast. Your pictures may come from a number of sources from the internet. Your pictures are to give insight. During the broadcast you will incorporate your pictures by using a Powerpoint displayed on the Smartboard. It would be to your benefit if you have your pictures during the dry run to see if they “fit” the scene. You are to find a minimum of twenty (10) pictures, but for the broadcast chose your best five or six. Turn in ten pictures and place both your name and role in the top right hand corner of each sheet.

*Studio Anchor #2/Social Commentator

You are another on-air personality who takes a stand on the issues. This anchor person is on air to give their opinion on the topics discussed. You should also discuss what should be done to solve any of the issues that are discussed during your broadcast. If at all possible, prove some of your statements with statistical information or direct quotes from your research. Your delivery is to be persuasive in nature, so make the audience believe in what you are to saying to be true. Make them question their beliefs and practices. Turn in a copy of your commentary and research, and do not forget to place your name and role on each of the sheets.

After the completion of each individual task, the group will convene and decide on the order of the broadcast. The studio anchorperson will be responsible in facilitating this discussion. The order should make logical sense and demonstrate a smooth progression.

When the order has been decided, your team should have at least three (3) dry runs before turning in the order sheet to Mrs.Callum. When you are pleased with the outcome of the broadcast, and then turn in your order sheet.

****ALL GROUP ROLES ARE REQUIRED TO CITE THE SOURCE FOR AT LEAST 2 RESOURCES USED TO GATHER INFORMATION FOR YOUR TASK!!!!****

Evaluation

Once again, each member is responsible for completing his/her own individual task. However, the broadcast is the determining factor when it comes to an overall grade.

Conclusion

Have fun, but plan to be very professional.  This is your chance to put the skills that you have worked on all year into action.  This project will hopefully show you why reading and writing skills are so important, and how they play a vital role in the real world.  Also, presentation days are May 27 and 28.  You are expected to dress in professional attire.  It is not required.  If you do not dress in professional attire, you are required to wear your school uniform. Please see the schedule for the day that your group will present:

May 27- Groups 1, 2, 3

May 28- Groups 4, 5, 6
