Native Americans Marking Period 1

Introduction

Before the Pilgrims, the 13 Colonies, and the Declaration of Independence, this land was home to the Native Americans. Our country was once the land that belonged to the Native Americans. They lived in all regions of what we know as the United States, however, the ways in which they lived varied from region to region.

This Webquest corresponds to Chapter 1 in the My World 5th grade social studies text.

Assistive Technology/Modifications

There are several ways to ensure students who need help with reading and comprehension can complete these Webquest.

  1. Text-to-Speech:
    • Highlight the text in the websites.
    • Go to Edit on the Safari toolbar.
    • Scroll down to Speech.
    • Click on Start Speaking.
  • 2. Rewordify.com:  Rewordify.com is a website that simplifies text by using synonyms for difficult words.
    •  Go to rewordify.com.
    • Highlight and copy the information from your website.
    • Paste the information into rewordify.com
    • Click rewordify text. (This text can also be read to the student using the same process as above.)
  • 3.Blendspace.com Multimedia Presentation:  This presentation was created for students who have difficulty focusing on a specific part of a task when a lot of information is presented.

Students are divided into 5 groups

  • Northwest
  • South East

Students can watch the video that corresponds to their region of the United States.  Copy and paste the link into Firefox.

Print out the following graphic organizers and guiding questions. Each graphic organizer corresponds to an aspect of the Native American culture.  The guiding questions help students understand important information to utilize in their organizers.  

It is up to the teacher to determine if every student in each group needs not complete all of the graphic organizers.

Grade 5 Benchmarks

The information gathered during this Webquest can be utilized to fulfill several of the Union City Grade 5 Benchmarks.

Listening and Speaking

Students can utilize the information they gathered about their geographical region to create a multimedia presentation or poster.

  • Student will orally report on a topic/text or present an opinion on a teacher-selected topic (Ex: important events in the exploration time period).  Presentation should include some type of visual display that enhances the development of the topic. Score at least a 2 on NJ Speaking Rubric. SL 5.4, SL 5.5, SL 5.6, L 5.1, L 5.3, L 5.6

Reading Information

Students can summarize the information they gathered in their Webquest groups. They can work in their groups, pairs, or alone to create a museum exhibit.  Some suggested projects are a diorama, collage, detailed drawing, or replica of an artifact.

  • Student will use the Internet to research one Pre-Colombian civilization and produce a published piece of writing that should include a summary of the information, using domain-specific vocabulary.  Student will also create a museum exhibit depicting the artifacts of one of the Pre-Colombian civilizations.
