How to Do Math as a Second Grader

Introduction

A second grader working on math is a student on an adventure.

This adventure helps them share a life full of sharing and fun with their family, friends, class, and pets.

Math helps people make enough cookies for each person in their family, so they can have two cookies.

Math helps people divide a pie so it can feed all of their friends on a picnic.

Math helps people to buy enough candy for everybody in your class.

Math helps people feed their dogs some bones today and buy enough bones to feed them tomorrow.

Task

In order to work math problems, people use a pencil and a few pieces of paper.

Then, people find a nice quiet and comfortable place that they can sit and have a flat surface to write on.

See how some students find a place to work math problems.

Next, you can take part in this advanture of solving problems or what is called working equations. Please follow the directions and work the equations for addition, subtraction, mutiplication, and division by following the directions and then all on your own. Have fun on this adventure. Look for the Lighthouse on the next page.

Process

HERE WE GO..........

This Lighthouse with show you the way back from your math adventure, well it will be still on this part of the page anyway! Go ahead and get started.

   Addition:

   Example

   Write   7 + 1 = ___      Count   *******    +     *     =   ********

Answer = 8      Double check your answer by counting the stars.

You can do all the rest from this list and evaluate them on the next page.

   7 + 5 = ___

   7 + 3 = ___

   7 + 10 = ___

   Subtraction:

   Example

   Write   14  -  5 = ___

   Count   ************** - ***** = ***************

Answer = 9   Double check your answer by counting the stars.

You can do all the rest from this list and evaluate them on the next page.

   10 - 7 = ___

   6 - 3 = ___

   1 - 1 = ___

   Mutiplication:

   Example

   Write   9 x 3 = ___

Count 9 stars in 3 groups or 9 times 3

   *********

   *********

   *********

Answer = 9 added up three times = 27 total stars

Double check your answer by counting the stars.

You can do all the rest from this list and evaluate them on the next page.

   5 x 3 = ___

   2 x 3 = ___

   7 x 3 = ___

   Division:

   Answers on Evaluation Page

   Example

   Write   56 ÷ 7 = ___

   Count

   ********************************************************

then breakdown the 56 stars into groups of 7 and see how many star sets you have

   *******

   *******

   *******

   *******

   *******

   *******

   *******

   *******

Answer = 8 groups after you divide the group of 56 into seven subgroups of stars

Double check your answer by counting the stars.

You can do all the rest from this list and evaluate them on the next page.

   9 ÷ 3 = ___

   16 ÷ 4 = ___

   25 ÷ 5 = ___

When you are finished check your sheet with the answers on the next page.

Evaluation

Here are the answers to the ath problems or equations that you worked on your own paper. Check them out and if you have a different answer, see what you did wrong so you do not do it next time. Thats the thing about adventures, a person uses what they know to help them recover from what they did not know.

Equations                    A few hints...

 7 + 5 = 12                ******* + ***** = ************

 7 + 3 = 10

 7 + 10 = 17               ******* + ********** = *****************

10 - 7 = 3

 6 - 3 = 3                    ****** - *** = ******

 1 - 1 = 0

 5 x 3 = 15

 2 x 3 = 6

 7 x 3 = 21                  ******* ******* ******* = *********************

 9 ÷ 3 = 3

 16 ÷ 4 = 4                  ***************** = **** **** **** ****

 25 ÷ 5 = 5

How did you do?

You can make up your own equations for your own adventure now.......

Go to the dining room table before dinner and count how many plates are in the cupboard.  Take that number and subtract it by how many people will eat dinner tonight. How many plates will be left in the cupboard after setting the table for dinner? That is another math adventure visited. Where will the next be?

There are other adventures and games when doing math. Here are other people using cards and dice to do math. Doesn't that look fun?

Conclusion

Congratulations on a job well done

You just had a math adventure and completed it with a job well done! There is so much more to learn in math. There are many books in the library that use math to tell a story.  You can also ask your parents or teacher for additional information.

Here are two or three books for fun math reading...
