Introduction
Have you ever wondered why people around the world live, eat, celebrate, and think so differently? What do we mean when we talk about culture? In this WebQuest, you and your team will become culture detectives! You’ll explore what makes each culture special — from food and traditions to music, clothes, and celebrations. Your mission is to discover the key elements that define a culture and present your findings to others in a fun, creative way. Get ready to travel the world without leaving your classroom and build a cultural guide that could help a newcomer understand a whole new world!
Task
Your group will work as a team of cultural researchers exploring the five key elements that shape every culture: traditions, food, clothing, holidays, and language. Each member of your group will take on a specific role and focus on one cultural element across two different countries of your choice.
Roles:
-
Tradition Tracker – explores customs, rituals, and beliefs.
-
Food Explorer – investigates national dishes, eating habits, and food-related traditions.
-
Style Expert – looks at traditional clothing, accessories, and their meanings.
-
Holiday Reporter – researches national holidays and festivals.
-
Language & Arts Scout – examines languages, dialects, and cultural expressions like music or dance.
Together, you will collect information from various reliable sources, compare cultural elements, and create a multimedia presentation or a digital poster titled “The 5 Elements of Culture”. Your goal is to teach your classmates what makes a culture unique — and why cultural diversity matters.
Use your creativity, teamwork, and English skills to present your findings in a visually engaging and informative way!
Process
-
You will be divided into groups of five students.
-
The teacher will assign the following roles randomly (or you may decide together):
-
Tradition Tracker
-
Food Explorer
-
Style Expert
-
Holiday Reporter
-
Language & Arts Scout
-
Once roles have been assigned, discuss a meeting schedule with your group and plan how you will collaborate.
-
Each member will carefully review their assigned role and explore the provided links and other resources.
-
Conduct in-depth research on your cultural element across two different countries: one English-speaking and one of your choice.
-
Each group member takes notes and collects visual material (images, flags, traditional symbols, etc.).
-
Share your findings with the group. Compare the cultural elements and agree on how to present them.
-
As a team, design a digital poster or multimedia presentation titled "The 5 Elements of Culture". Each role must be represented with both text and images.
-
Practice your presentation. Each team member must explain their cultural element in English.
-
Present your project to the class. Be ready to answer questions and reflect on what you have learned about cultural diversity.
Tradition Tracker
As the Tradition Tracker, your task is to uncover the customs, rituals, and beliefs that define each culture. Focus on everyday traditions, family practices, greetings, social behaviors, and cultural values in both countries.
Ask yourself: What do people do differently? What do they celebrate regularly that others might not? What meanings do these traditions carry?
Compare your findings and think about how traditions help shape national identity.
Food Explorer
You are the group’s Food Explorer! Your mission is to dive into the delicious world of national dishes, traditional ingredients, meal customs, and food-related celebrations.
Find out what people typically eat, how they prepare food, and when they eat. Do meals bring people together? Are there special dishes for certain holidays or seasons?
Compare the cuisines of your two countries and discover the stories food can tell.
Style Expert
Welcome, Style Expert! Your job is to explore what people wear and why. Investigate traditional clothing, accessories, and materials — as well as the cultural meanings behind them.
Find out how fashion reflects history, climate, religion, or lifestyle. Are there outfits worn only during festivals or ceremonies?
Create a visual comparison of traditional clothing from the two countries — and be ready to explain their significance.
Holiday Reporter
You are the group’s Holiday Reporter! Your task is to investigate public holidays and traditional festivals in your selected countries.
Focus on how and why people celebrate, what symbols they use, and how the holidays reflect national values.
Are these holidays religious, historical, or seasonal? What traditions are practiced during them?
Compare celebrations from both cultures and note similarities and differences.
Language & Arts Scout
As the Language & Arts Scout, your role is to explore the soul of a culture — its language and artistic expression.
Learn about the country’s official language(s), dialects, popular sayings, and non-verbal communication. Also, explore music, dance, crafts, or other unique artistic forms.
Ask: How does this culture express itself creatively? What does language tell us about people’s lives and values?
Compare language and arts in both countries, and prepare short samples (videos, music clips, quotes) to share.
