What makes a community sustainable, and how can we design one for our future?

Introduction

Welcome, eco-innovators! The world is changing fast, and so must the places we live in. Your team has been invited to take on a challenge: design a sustainable community that balances people, nature, and progress. What should it look like? How will people live, work, and travel there? Through this WebQuest, you’ll explore real-world environmental, economic, and social issues to create a model community that could inspire change around the globe. Let’s build the future—together!

Task

Your mission is to work in a team of four students to design a model of a sustainable community. Each student will take on one of the following roles:

  1. Urban Planner – Designs the layout of the community: housing, green spaces, schools, roads.

  2. Environmental Scientist – Researches eco-friendly solutions: energy, water use, recycling.

  3. Economist – Plans local economy, job creation, public transport, and cost-efficiency.

  4. Sociologist – Ensures community well-being: inclusivity, education, healthcare, safety.

Your final product will be a multimedia presentation (poster, video, or digital model) showcasing your community design, along with a written group report that explains your choices and how they meet sustainability goals.

Process
  1. Form a group of four and decide who will take each of the four roles.

  2. Begin your research using the role-specific sources and tips provided below.

  3. Take notes and summarize your findings in your role-specific journal.

  4. Meet with your group to share information and make decisions collaboratively.

  5. Use your knowledge to design a complete sustainable community.

  6. Prepare a multimedia presentation (poster, slide deck, or video) to show your design.

  7. Write a group report (500–700 words) explaining the project and how it meets sustainability principles.

  8. Submit your report and be ready to present your work to the class.
