Introduction
Imagine you are part of a team of educational psychologists hired by a school that is struggling to understand why students are not learning effectively. Teachers are using different strategies, but student performance is inconsistent and confusing.
Your mission is to investigate three major learning theories: Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory, and help the school decide how students actually learn best.
By the end of this WebQuest, you will discover how each theory explains learning and how teachers can use them in real classrooms to improve student success.
Task
You will work in groups of 3 students to complete this WebQuest.
Your team will create a Google Slides presentation or Canva infographic that:
- Defines each learning theory
- Identifies key theorists
- Explains how each theory explains learning
- Gives real classroom examples for each theory
- Compares the three theories
- Recommends which theory (or combination of theories) best supports student learning
Each group member must speak during the presentation.
Process
Step 1: Research the Three Theories
Use the following links to gather information:
- Cognitive Psychology: https://www.simplypsychology.org/cognitive.html
- Behaviorism: https://www.simplypsychology.org/behaviorism.html
- Social Cognitive Theory: https://www.simplypsychology.org/social-learning-theory.html
Take notes on:
- Definition of each theory
- Key psychologists
- Main ideas
- How learning happens
- Classroom examples
Step 2: Organize Your Information
Create a comparison chart with:
- Theory name
- Key ideas
- How learning happens
- Strengths
- Classroom example
Make sure all three theories are included.
Step 3: Create Your Final Product
Create ONE of the following:
- Google Slides presentation
OR - Canva infographic
Your project must include:
- Title slide/page
- One section for each theory
- Comparison slide
- Final recommendation slide
Make it visual, organized, and easy to understand.
Step 4: Prepare for Presentation
Each group member must:
- Explain at least one theory
- Speak clearly and confidently
- Use visuals to support explanations
Evaluation
| Category | Excellent (4) | Good (3) | Needs Improvement (2) | Poor (1) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accuracy of Theories | All theories are correct and detailed | Mostly correct with minor errors | Some missing or unclear info | Inaccurate or incomplete |
| Comparison | Clear and insightful comparison | Some comparisons included | Weak or unclear comparison | No comparison |
| Classroom Examples | Strong, realistic examples | Some examples included | Weak or unclear examples | Missing examples |
| Presentation Quality | Very clear, organized, engaging | Mostly clear | Some confusion or disorganization | Hard to follow |
| Participation | All members participate equally | Most members participate | Uneven participation | One person does most work |
Conclusion
Now that you have explored three major learning theories, think deeply about what you discovered.
Answer the following questions:
- Which theory do you think best explains how students learn? Why?
- Can teachers rely on only one theory in the classroom? Why or why not?
- How might combining all three theories improve student learning?
- How has your understanding of learning changed after this activity?
Final Challenge Question:
If you were a teacher, how would you design your classroom using these theories?
